Just a few minutes from the River Trave, the museum harbour and the old castle gate, Die Reederin is located in one of the small alleyways on Lübeck’s Old Town Island, which has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987. The street Große Altenfähre was spared from the air raid on Lübeck in the Second World War and still shows its homogenous historical character today. The hotel is located in a listed old town house from 1790, which for a long time was the headquarters of the shipping company F. H. Bertling – where, incidentally, the former German Chancellor and Lübeck-born Willy Brandt completed a traineeship at a young age.
Dorothea, Helene, Catharine, Hilde, Ursula, Paula and Anni – these ships once sailed for the shipping company, today they give their names to the hotel’s five hotel rooms and two suites. In the course of the refurbishment from 2017 to 2021, the building fabric was preserved and reused as far as possible. For example, the coffered doors of the old filing cabinets now serve as headboards for beds, while sea containers were used as wall panelling for the walk-in showers in the bathrooms. The colour concept is also maritime – midnight blue, oxide red and a light grey run through the rooms. It is thanks to the owner and Hamburg-born Nina Dietze that Die Reederin radiates elegance and openness. She brought back antique furnishing treasures from her travels to Denmark and Sweden and combined them with modern classics.
Anyone staying at the Reederin can also enjoy the communal rooms: on the ground floor, there is a breakfast room with an adjoining terrace and another dining room with a large table, as well as the ‘Herrenwyk’ room with four metre high ceilings and old wooden floorboards, which can be used for receptions of all kinds. The ‘Kontor’ on the first floor with its historic stucco ceiling also serves as a venue for events or a place to linger. The Cognac Room, the former archive of the shipping company, is a very special place of retreat.
