Art for all – with this impulse, Karl Ernst Osthaus founded the Museum Folkwang in the West German industrial city of Hagen in 1902 as the first museum of modern art.
Until his early death, he had Henry van de Velde at his side as a long-time companion, who not only planned the interior design of the museum and the private residence, but also introduced Osthaus to the French Impressionists.
The 52-minute ARTE documentary explores the life and work of the young pioneer and art patron, who was an important reformer and cultural mediator of his time.
