In the Hotel Sturm, the architecture of the 80s takes on new dimensions, artfully and subtly connecting the past with the present. A multi-layered house with a clear philosophy and sustainable concept, set amidst the cultural landscape of the Rhön.
In order to preserve the old structures and peculiarities of the family-run hotel, which opened in 1976, new layers of space were added to the inventory, linking both worlds. At times, these are high freestanding wooden lattice screens that playfully and elegantly shroud the former breakfast and conference area. Sometimes it’s a slatted wooden façade that conceals the cantilevered ground floor. The 40-year-old eight-storey hotel tower made of brown clinker brick has also been given a new coat of paint. Bathed in white, it not only looks fascinatingly contemporary, but also like a sculpture jutting out into the green landscape.
Inside, the modernised foyer clad in silver fir welcomes visitors. As the most recent renovation effort, the original breakfast room was transformed into a modern restaurant, “Otto’s”, whose openly designed kitchen reflects the values of quality, honesty and transparency. Here, too, the play of concealment and superimposition continues: screens made of black vertical wooden slats divide the large guest room into more intimate areas, while a wooden lattice ceiling structures the roof glazing.
All rooms are furnished with simple elegance, radiating a sense of shelter. Those staying in one of the new garden rooms, which were built entirely in wood, overlook the swimming pond.
In addition to the ecologically and regionally minded “Otto’s”, pure nature is also available directly from the kitchen garden. The spa area offers various saunas; from there you can also reach the swimming pond or stroll around the extensive hotel garden. Including a climate-neutral frog concert.
