Apartment JAP Retreat Appar­te­ments

Holidays with campus flair: Not only the fresh breeze, but also the reinter­preted brick archi­tecture of the JAP Retreat Apart­ments in Wil­helms­haven reveal that the North Sea is only a few minutes away by bike. Located right next to the city park, the apart­ments are part of an interlo­cking ensemble in which architect Ulf Janssen, tog­ether with his wife and host Aleida, mixes living and working. The campus concept is already reflected in the shape and design of the building structure, which shields the building to the outside in order to open up the rooms towards the inside.

Dif­ferent sized recycled facing bricks and matching mortar were deve­loped and coor­di­nated for the light grey façade in col­la­bo­ration with the Danish clinker brick manu­fac­turer Petersen Tegl. The homo­ge­neous overall appearance is broken up by spo­ra­di­cally placed windows and doors as well as small views in and out, which play with the changing light mood and sym­bolise the masonry tra­dition.

Behind the clear brick façade a com­bi­nation of bright living and working units are grouped around an inner cour­tyard. The three JAP Retreat Appar­te­ments vary in size and can accom­modate up to three guests each. Com­for­table beds, colourful bath­rooms with large showers, cosy sofas to relax on, office corners and open-plan living areas with a kitchen and long dining table invite you to relax or get tog­ether. One of the bed­rooms even has a free­standing bathtub. As the owners have been coll­ecting fur­niture, lighting, art and 20th century classics for many years, many pieces were inte­grated into the interior design concept and com­bined with exclusive mate­rials and a bold use of colour.

All three units have their own small garden with terrace or balcony. In the imme­diate vicinity is a co-working space as well as a small roof garden with raised vege­table and herb beds. As the archi­tecture firm JAP is also part of the ensemble, inte­rested guests have the oppor­tunity to exchange ideas about design and archi­tecture in person.

What to do

The Rüstringer Stadtpark is right on the doorstep, with idyllic paths for walking, jogging or cycling, including a botanical garden and rosarium, all the city's sights are within walking distance and the sea with its beaches is only 3 km away. Boat trips to the national park, Helgoland and harbour tours depart from Nassau harbour. The aquarium, the UNESCO World Heritage Wadden Sea Visitor Centre and the German Naval Museum are also well worth a visit. Those looking for even more rest and relaxation can immerse themselves in the nearby Nautimo Sauna World.
