The first hills of Pommard can already be seen from Beaune, a village surrounded by vineyards and clos, known for its red wine culture. La Maison de Pommard, an old 17th-century winegrower’s house, is located directly on the parish square of the village, which was named after Pomona, the goddess of orchards. When the owner, Isabelle de Montille, inherited the house from her father, a passionate winegrower who had bought it solely for its cellars, she decided to convert the largely neglected building into a small hotel.
With the support of Parisian architect Emanuele Salini, the building was renovated, combining old stone with modern amenities. The façade, typical of a Burgundian winegrower’s house, was restored identically, while the central interior was opened up with a contemporary touch to give the house more light. This was an aspect that was particularly important to Isabelle de Montille.
It took seven years to redesign all the rooms with as few partition walls as possible. Since then, horizontal and vertical perspectives have been created that are rather unusual for a traditional house in Burgundy. The guest lounge, with its view of the walled garden, is particularly impressive with its light, linear heights combined with the old masonry, exposed beams and open concrete staircase. Stone, wood, lime plaster, waxed concrete and oxidised steel define the interior surfaces and exude a warm, modern atmosphere.
Each of the four guest rooms and one suite have been named after exceptional Burgundy vintages and furnished with great sensitivity and sophistication. Whether it’s 1969, with its white walls, rounded shapes and alcoves reminiscent of Greece and Morocco, in 1811, the year of the ‘comet wine’, which places bright pink chairs on antique floor tiles in front of the patina of the walls, in the cosy 1985, one of the coldest years of its time, in the modern 2005 or in the spacious suite with a free-standing bathtub. In the morning, guests can enjoy a regional breakfast on the veranda or in the courtyard of the garden, and in the evening there is a selection of delicacies accompanied by fine wines. A pool in front of the old stone wall, a sauna and great hospitality complement the wholehearted savoir-vivre of this beautiful estate.
