On the edge of the Palatinate Forest, two Bavarians have continued to build on a historic winegrowing estate. Ois is an apartment bed and breakfast that consistently translates Palatinate serenity into building culture.

Bed & Breakfast Ois B&B in Pfalz, Siebeldingen / DE – Germany, Rhineland-Palatinate

Bed & Breakfast Ois B&B

The Ois is located in the Southern Palatinate, roughly halfway between Karlsruhe and Kaiserslautern, in the wine village of Siebeldingen. Here, at the foot of the Palatinate Forest, two Bavarians have – in a wonderfully pragmatic way – created something that couldn’t be more perfect for the location: they bought a historic winegrower’s farm, expanded it and transformed it into an apartment bed and breakfast. Why does this fit so well in the Southern Palatinate? The existing structure is accepted and, in a second step, becomes the functional framework for something new. No fuss, no staging – just effortless authenticity. And this takes Palatinate customs to a new level: an attitude that otherwise characterises everyday life is also applied here to buildings. This preserves building culture and continues it.

The name of the B&B subtly refers to the origins of the owners who moved here. The operators came to the Wine Route from Munich and not only renovated the 300-year-old farmstead, but also completed recognised training as ‘Culture and Wine Ambassadors’ for the Palatinate and as ‘Recognised Advisors for German Wine’.

Bavaria remains – in its own unique way – part of the story. The couple have immortalised their dialect in the name of the B&B: the term Ois comes from Bavarian and can be translated as ‘everything’. Here, it has been reinterpreted somewhat and stands for the combination of different elements such as accommodation, enjoyment and community. And all this takes place in a harmonious, unpretentious house.

But back to the renovation of the vacant winery: existing structures of the Baroque ensemble have been preserved, supplemented and precisely adapted. Historical materials and room sequences remain visible, while new interventions are clearly recognisable as such. The design is minimalist, functional and built to last. The result is an ensemble that continues the history of the place.

Although Ois is run as an apartment building, a communal breakfast is included. In the mornings, guests gather around a large table in the lounge, where they can exchange travel tips or discover things they have in common. The hosts also have a wide range of addresses for winegrowers, restaurants and cafés that are well worth a visit.

What to do

Cycling, wine tasting or hiking in the Palatinate Forest. There are also a wide range of golfing opportunities here. It's just a 30-minute drive across the border to France.

Why we like this house

Because it has been extended with calm and restraint – exemplary for a region where the approach to established building culture is currently being renegotiated in many places.

This house is great for

People who enjoy the finer things in life. The fact that the owners are trained wine ambassadors is a huge help when it comes to exploring the region with this focus.

Sustainability

It is possible to travel here by public transport, but this makes exploring the region more difficult – visiting wineries requires your own car.
