How did a valley in Grisons, of all places, become an architectural El Dorado? The first permanent settlements appeared in the Vals valley during the 12th century. In 1891 the only known thermal spring in the whole of Grisons was discovered, and soon a first spa was opened with accommodation. Nevertheless, the valley, remained largely isolated, due to its secluded position to the south of Chur. “Mountain, stone, water – building in stone, building with stone, building into the mountain, building out of the mountain, being in the mountain. How can the meanings and the sensual connotations of these words be interpreted in architectural form?“ wondered Peter Zumthor, and the answer that eventually took shape made Vals known not only among architects, but also among visitors interested in unusual buildings. As a winter sports resort, Vals remains a hidden gem and is not as busy by a long way as other skiing areas in Switzerland …
