Pförtner Penthouse

Stress relief with history. The Pförtner Penthouse between Schliersee and Tegernsee is a fusion of industrial and alpine design with unconventional charm, which may be due to the origin of the house. For this purist modern holiday accomodation in Hausham, Upper Bavaria, in fact dates back to 1869 and was once the gateway to the mines in the region. During the core renovation in 2021, an architecturally straightforward penthouse extension was added to the former gatehouse, which today with its four holiday apartments guarantees deep relaxation and a sweeping view of the Schliersee mountains.

This idiosyncratic and successful combination not only offers further options, but also gives the historic, industrial-looking building a new flair. The interior also reflects the stylistic tension between simplicity and warmth, brutalism and cosiness. Clear lines and open construction meet natural materials and homely accessories.

The structure made of regional spruce wood provides for a special indoor climate, the heated exposed screed for cosy coolness and the generous layout of the apartments for an airy ambience. Each of the penthouses has an individual name, is suitable for two to four people and opens on to the surrounding wooden terrace where you can enjoy the panorama. For example, you can watch shooting stars in the “Starry Nights”, trace Bavarian craftsmanship and its cross-generational flow of knowledge in the “Caskade” dive into your own personal adventure in the “Wild Within” or in the “Mirabell” which stands for harmony with nature. This runs like a common theme through all the holiday apartments, as most of the furniture was made directly in Hausham, including the four-poster bed made of Swiss stone pine, the oak dining table or the kitchen block made of Black MDF (medium density fibreboard) to the steel elements in the kitchen and bathroom. All textiles have also been sourced from local suppliers, while chairs and armchairs are made from recycled plastic. Wherever possible, the Pförtner Penthouse comes full circle – from furnishings to history. An ideal place to regenerate.

Manufaktur Eham is not only the host of the Pförtner Penthouse, but also responsible for the conceptual design and masterful craftsmanship of the entire interior. As a down-to-earth as well as experimental mixture of carpenters, craftsmen, designers and architects, the medium-sized company from the Tegernsee Valley is always concerned with the holistic approach – deeply rooted in tradition and with a visionary view of the future.
