Rifugio Friulano is a hideaway in the hills of the upper Italian region of Friuli. Originally the owners had been looking for an old stone house to buy, but they fell in love with this small property on a steep slope north of the town of Udine. Here they built themselves a refuge to retreat to and take a break from everyday life: a simple and archaic wooden house with 35cm thick walls of untreated timber and a copper-clad roof. From a distance, the building conjures the image of a defensive tower. It is almost completely closed off to the northern side – the entrance door is the only opening. In the other directions, especially to the south, the house opens up with large, panoramic windows. Some of these can be closed with wooden sliding doors.
The house offers a living space of 150m2 over three levels. On the lower level there is the dining and living area with access to the terrace. The first floor is the entrance level thanks to the hillside location, and here you will find two bedrooms and the bathroom. Upstairs there is an open plan living room with access to a large balcony. With windows on three sides, from here you can enjoy panoramic views over the hills to the sea. The house also has a garden on the hillside with olive and fig trees and numerous herbs.
What to do
The Refugio is designed as a retreat, hence there is neither internet nor television. Instead, there is plenty of time for other activities such as reading, playing games, cooking or simply letting your soul breathe. From Rifiguio Friulano you can easily and quickly reach both the banks of the Tagliamento and the coast of the Upper Adriatic – including the towns of Trieste, Grado and Venice. Hiking is possible in the Julian Alps, which are in the immediate vicinity. Visits to the city of Udine, day trips to Trieste and Venice.
