Hotel The El Paso in La Palma, El Paso / ES – Spain

Hotel The El Paso

Sounds of Silence: Nestled between the volcanic landscape of La Palma lies The El Paso — a small, quiet hamlet with a former music school, bakery and stables, which today is home to guests, art and gold records.La Palma is called La Isla Bonita, “the beautiful island”, characterised by volcanic valleys, pine forests, high mountains and black beaches. At an altitude of 600 metres, close to the entrance to the Caldera Taburiente nature reserve, El Paso looks out from the mountains to the sea. A small abandoned village consisting of a former music school, a bakery and old stables. Journalist and music producer Tim Renner and the Lisbon-based design studio ambits have transformed it into a hotel with three guest rooms, a flat and a wide range of facilities. The aim was to preserve the architectural heritage and its essential elements and incorporate new ones.

Where a dusty road used to pass through the ensemble, curved white paths inspired by architect Cesar Manrique now connect the renovated buildings and a newly constructed bungalow. The old music school forms the centre of the 2,000 square metre property, which aims to maintain its village-like character in all its facets. There is not only a communal kitchen in the former bakery, but also a long table made from old floorboards for communal meals, a fireplace for cooler evenings and the owner’s personal vinyl collection, which is available to all visitors for individual sound checks. Whether Roxanne, Sonne, Beautiful Day or Slim Shady — all four differently sized accommodations are designed for bright, sunny days and strike the right note: an atmospheric mix of black, white and wood. Combined with clear aesthetics, ensuite bathrooms and green views. In addition, each of the lodgings has its own history, including a golden record, original backstage pass, large Marshall speaker and rock’n’roll bathrobes.

Just as the cover artwork is part of every album, it is also a must at The El Paso, with works by music photographer Olaf Heine, graphic designer Eike König and artist Tina Winkhaus adorning the white walls. Together with large-format, colourful works by well-known street artists on the outside walls. Again and again, the white paths open up into different oases where guests can retreat to relax or socialise. Whether in the Mediterranean garden between orange, lemon, grapefruit and avocado trees, by the turquoise-blue pool between white concrete and red and white striped sun loungers, on the yoga deck or in the Jacuzzi slightly higher up with its legendary view. Not to mention the starry sky glittering over La Palma. You’ll certainly find the right song in the record collection to accompany every moment.

Owners of The El Paso

Owner

Music producer, journalist and author Tim Renner has spent a lot of time travelling as the former head of Universal Music Germany and State Secretary for Culture in Berlin. But none of the numerous hotels ever felt like home. With The El Paso, he wanted to create a place that told both its regional origins and its own story. Full of music, art and exciting conversations. The former music school on La Palma was the perfect place for this.

This is a gem of a place in a quiet residential neighborhood with good vibes all around. I stayed at the Slim Shady suite for a few nights in November 2025. Everything there has been hand-picked for style and comfort, from the stainless steel coffee grinder to the excellent mattresses and fluffy rock star bathrobes. The property has a communal space styled as a listening lounge, complete with comfy couches, an eclectic vinyl collection and a Numan stereo setup. There even is a mirror ball. I was met on site by Anouck, the charming manager, who handed over the keys and gave me a tour of the premises. The owner also happened to be around. He not only told me the intriguing story of the property, he was also forthcoming with recommendations for sightseeing and fine dining on the island. What’s not to like? I will be back.

We stayed 4 nights in The El Paso and we loved it. A place you feel good as soon as you pass the portal. Wonderfully renovated buildings with taste and modernity, while keeping the authenticity of the place. Like staying in a small Mexican village. Rooms with all the necessary comfort. Swimming pool, Jacuzzi, Barbecue, equipped kitchen, everything is common but there are only 3 bedrooms so we are far from the crowd of great hotels “All-in”. A large common room, for breakfast (carefully prepared by Yadami), to drink and listen to music thanks to all the vinyls made available by the owner of the premises. Music that is everywhere, in small touches, in decorations, frames, furniture, bathrobes (Ramones, Queen…). For convenience, there are two parking spaces available. In the end, nothing wrong, everything was perfect

Svenja sagt:
