La Tour Sarrazine in the village of Montaren near the southern French renaissance town of Uzès is a medieval tower dating to the 12th century and one of the oldest buildings in the region. During the elaborate restoration and transformation in a guest house combining authenticity and comfort was of the highest priority. New elements are clearly recognisable as such, but have been designed in a neutral mode that doesn’t steal the limelight from the historic building itself. Wood was chosen as the material for the new elements, such as the balustrades on the balcony and roof terrace. And, out of respect for the historical monument, the interiors were designed in such a way that the outer walls were not altered. The furnishings are both simple and elegant and perfectly complement the historical substance of the building. The tower includes three guest rooms, a library, a kitchen and a dining room as well as a roof terrace.
The holiday home Maison De Joyeuse is located on the east side of the tower.. Built on the foundations of two old neighbouring buildings, this house features a façade of wooden slats that create a visual link with the wooden elements of the tower. This 92-square-metre house, which can be accessed via a wooden walkway, has three floors: On the lower level there is the living room with a fireplace and sofa bed as well as the kitchen and dining area. On the middle floor are the bathroom and the bedroom with a view of the tower and the garden with pool. On the top floor there is a small gallery and a 20 sqm roof terrace with views over the village rooftops and up to the castle.
Note: The tower is no longer operated as a B&B. It is only rented out in the summer months and only together with the holiday home. La Maison de Joyeuse can be rented weekly from April to October.
