Concrete and the Middle Ages! Zum Egle 1336 is a B&B with two rooms in the historic old town of Constance. It is situated on the second floor of a heritage listed half-timbered house, which also houses a shop, the owner’s architectural office, and his family apartment over its four floors.
Opening up instead of covering up was the maxim of the building’s renovation. Traces of the past were meticulously uncovered and put on display. For example, the raw walls of the two guest rooms show remains of old floral wallpaper and medieval murals with images of saints and banners. The skewed beams of the half-timbered walls are also visible. Walls of exposed concrete display the latest remodelling: a concrete core was placed in the centre of the house, where the bathrooms are now located. Through the combination of different construction phases, the rooms show the lively development of the house and do not feel like a museum at all. The furnishings are not restricted to one style either: vintage pieces are combined with modern, straight-lined beds and washbasins.
One of the rooms faces the old town lane, the other one a small, covered inner courtyard, where breakfast is served. The bathroom in between can be used by the residents of both rooms. As the guest rooms are only rented individually or to guests travelling together; nobody has to share the bathroom with strangers.
