Visitors to the Tannerhof in the climatic health resort of Bayrischzell not only wander among meadows, forests and mountains, but also among a wide variety of genres.
Whether it’s holidays, therapeutic fasting, tai chi, high culture, pop concerts or regional creative cuisine – everything comes together here with a shared vision: ‘Become essential, human being’. And that’s been the case since 1905. Originally founded as a sanatorium for natural healing methods, the family business has continued to develop to this day and, with its building complex that has grown over the decades, now resembles an idyllic little village. When the sanatorium was converted into a nature hotel and health resort in 2011, the new orientation also entailed a far-reaching architectural overhaul of the historic buildings and selective, modern additions. Together with Munich architect Florian Nagler, the existing buildings were renovated, expanded and redesigned. Always in keeping with traditional values: close to nature, sustainable, creative and rooted.
The Tannerhof not only offers a wide range of health and wellness packages, but also various types of accommodation. The main buildings feature small rooms reduced to the essentials as well as spacious rooms, some of which are modern in design and some of which are furnished with antique furniture. The old air huts offer special retreats: rustic wooden cottages on the slope above the main buildings, where time seems to have stood still. These are joined by four modern, linear hut towers that transport the idea of their models into the present. The rooms are stacked on top of each other like cuboids. Stairwells and balconies are cut into the tower, so to speak, and large windows bring the landscape into the rooms, so that the inside and outside merge naturally. This motto is also reflected in the orangery, which connects the centuries-old and modernised farmhouse ‘Alte Tann’ with the bathhouse – a building from the 1960s that now houses treatments and exercise facilities.
The latest addition to the ensemble is the “Bade-Harpfe”: a simple, airy and light-flooded wooden building with an agricultural feel, which in its archetypal form is used for drying hay and grain. At the Tannerhof, this charming building serves as a regeneration room, with a relaxation room, a sauna with a view of the Wendelstein mountain and a 25-metre-long natural pool. Another special piece of architecture that focuses on the essentials, intensifies the experience and allows people to blend in with nature.
