Hotel Alpenloge in Westallgäu, Scheffau / DE – Germany, Bavaria

Hotel Alpenloge

New start in the Allgäu: In the Bavarian village of Scheffau, Anja Engelke and Michael Schott have found both a new home and their vocation as hosts. The sociologist and the photographer moved from Hamburg to the western part of the Allgäu to set up a boutique hotel in an old schoolhouse. Since the distinctive building from the 1930s could not be preserved — as was originally planned — the house was rebuilt. In the same style, but with a modern building fabric. With shutters, transom windows and the traditional shingle façade, it looks very similar to its predecessor. Yet the “inner values” of the timber-frame building are definitely modern — from pellet heating system to room ventilation and a lift that connects the three floors. The original schoolhouse did not have a conservatory, balconies and a wellness area either.
The alpine style that the house exudes on the outside is complemented by the elegant-modern, almost sophisticated ambience inside: floral wallpaper, brass fittings, velvet and even the light switches evoke the 1930s. Guests stay in nine loges, which combine spaciousness with a sensual feeling of home. Natural materials such as wood, natural stone, linen or loden determine the atmosphere — and, of course, the view of alpine meadows, the Allgäu Alps or the village church steeple.
The wellness area in the basement also affords a mountain panorama: large windows open up the sauna and relaxation room with fireplace towards the landscape. In the winter garden on the ground floor, the beautiful view competes with the culinary delights served to guests in the evenings. Those who wish can sit at the community table and almost feel like visiting friends.

Owners of Alpenloge

Owner

Anja & Michael: “We have been travelling a lot. Different countries. Cultures. Types of accommodation. We had the chance to get to know all that and had a sense of home in some of the places. Home. That is always a place which you can make a little piece of your heart. Three years ago, we decided to bring this wonderful feeling of home to a place that was very special to us. A place that we wanted to fill with our own memories, impressions and experiences. So there it is, the Alpenloge. It is our house — no matter the direction — just as we have always felt it. And yet it stands in one place. Our home. Which we now want to share and enliven with our guests.”
