alte Säge (old sawmill)
An old sawmill on the Austrian Weissensee has been extensively renovated and is now home to four extraordinary apartments. You will still find a lot of wood within this house, which is no longer used just as a raw material, but also for the walls, floors and gables, In combination with large window areas and unusually cut rooms, a set of modern and homely apartments have been created. Some feature a loft flair, with views into the open gable area and overhanging oriels above the millstream.
Two new apartments were added in the summer of 2017, in the large garden of the Alte Säge. The building practically grows out of the terraced terrain. Its tower-like entrances are encased in Corten steel and offer views into the deeper, embedded bedrooms through 4.5-meter-high windows. The living rooms open with large windows to the lake side. A lot of wood has also been used in these apartments, just as in the old sawmill, but they also feature an interplay with exposed concrete.
A bathing spot at the lake is only a few steps away. You can also can rent the “Badehütte Weissensee” bath-house together with one of the apartments. This award-winning building was also designed by the architect of the “Alte Säge”. It was constructed entirely of larch wood and stands out by its contemporary architecture.
In winter returning to your apartment in the “Alte Säge” is especially pleasant: you can warm up in the sauna or then curl up on the sofa by the stove.
