alte Säge (old sawmill)
An old sawmill on the Austrian Weissensee has been extensively renovated and is now home to four high-quality apartments. You still find a lot of wood here, which is no longer used as a raw material, but on the walls, floors, and gables. Nevertheless, the atmosphere is not overly rustic, because modern, linear designs dominate. Some of the apartments offer a loft feeling, views into the open gable area, and overhanging oriels above the millstream. A bathing spot at the lake is only a few steps away. You can also can rent the “Badehütte Weissensee” bath-house. This award-winning building was also designed by the architect of the “Alte Säge”. It was constructed entirely of larch wood and stands out by its contemporary architecture.
Winter at Lake Weissensee is a special experience: the lake is frozen from mid-December to early March and becomes a huge ice rink – Europe´s largest natural ice surface. Here you can go ice-skating or curling, play ice hockey or simply take a walk on the ice. Returning to your apartment in the “Alte Säge” is especially pleasant after a day outside in the fresh winter air: you can warm up in the sauna and then curl up on the sofa by the stove.
