Apartment Alte Schreinerei Werkstatt in Fichtelgebirge, Hohenberg / DE – Germany, Bavaria

Apartment Alte Schreinerei Werkstatt

The workshop building of the former village joinery in Hohenberg an der Eger is yet another example of regional architectural heritage saved by Tatjana and Georg Kaiser, ingeniously combining heritage conservation, design, and modern living comfort. Originally used as the joinery’s workshop, the building has been carefully renovated and transformed into a holiday loft accommodating up to four people. The historic 19th-century façade has been preserved and faithfully reconstructed.

Inside, the loft surprises with a well-thought-out spatial concept that combines the industrial charm of the workshop with contemporary design. The walls have largely been clad in cream-coloured wood, creating a bright, warm atmosphere. An open-plan layout creates a sense of spaciousness, whilst harmonious colour accents and bespoke fittings divide the space into functional zones and make clever use of the area: a living area with a cosy sofa arrangement, a dining area with a corner bench, and a very well-equipped kitchen with a cooking island and built-in seating niches. The double bed, with easy access, is integrated into the room as an alcove. The children sleep in a bunk bed built into a recess. It becomes particularly cosy when the fire is burning in the barrel-shaped wood-burning stove.

In addition to the loft itself, guests at the workshop and residents of the neighbouring holiday home, the Alte Schreinerei, have access to a sauna with a rooftop lounge – a place to relax (in both winter and summer) with panoramic views over Hohenberg and the surrounding hills. This picturesque little town on the River Eger in the Fichtelgebirge Nature Park lies on the Porcelain Route, right on the Czech border, and is renowned for its exceptionally well-preserved castle complex. The Werkstatt loft is just a short walk away, in a quiet side street below the Castle Square. In addition, a restored two-storey play barn complements the facilities and is sure to be a big hit with children.

What to do

In summer: hiking in the Fichtelgebirge (e.g. to the Kösseinehaus), cycling (there’s also an e-bike hire in Ruppertsgrün), swimming in the outdoor pool; in winter: downhill skiing, cross-country skiing, sledging or ice skating; swimming and enjoying the sauna at the Alexbad, the Sibyllenbad thermal spa or, of course, in the loft’s own sauna; visiting Hohenberg Castle, the ‘Porzellanikon’ porcelain museum, Waldsassen Basilica and many other cultural attractions; the play barn for children; regional cuisine; and relaxing in the tranquillity of the loft.

Why we like this house

Child-friendly accommodation with a cool interior design.

This house is great for

Couples and families. When the loft is rented in combination with the neighboring cottage, it is great for two or more families travelling together.
