Ca’ Giuconda

Ca’ Giuconda

The walls of the former patrician house Ca’ Giuconda are over 500 years old. Situated in a beautiful borgo – one of the Borghi più belli d’Italia – it towers over the Piedmontese vineyards and masterfully stages its patina.

The Piedmont stretches out at the foot of the French and Swiss Alps. It’s known for its exquisite wines, white truffles and traditional specialities. On one of the many hills in the Alta Langa region sits the medieval village of Mombaldone, which seems to have fallen out of time. Even the Ca’ Giuconda holiday home, which is integrated into the castle-like structure, tells a centuries-old story.

Once the summer residence of a high-ranking Piedmontese cleric, the lavishly designed, well-preserved stone building with its domed ceilings, frescoes and spacious garden bears witness to the wealth of its owner. In the 20th century, the house was run as a butcher’s shop and salumeria before it was renovated in recent years and the historical quality of the building was carefully uncovered and bathed in a new light. In contrast to the former splendour of the building, the ornamentless, minimalist furnishings in black marble and delicate steel furniture emphasise modern clarity. Yet its sophisticated materials subtly hark back to the splendour of days gone by.

The house has four levels. On the ground floor, there is a small indoor pool with access to the garden. Above this is the spacious fireplace room, which opens up to the outside and leads to a seating and barbecue area with a herb garden. There is also a well-equipped wine cellar where guests can savour regional wines. The heart of the house hides on the third floor – a monumental marble kitchen block framed by the wall decorations of a bygone era, with a fantastic view of the Bormida Valley and its forests. The adjoining dining room similarly emphasises the exposed patina, combined with a marble table top and sensual art. When the sun shines, the balcony invites you to enjoy a caffè with a view.

Next to the kitchen and dining room are two of the four bedrooms – one with a double bed and one with two single beds. The two other double bedrooms are located on the top floor under the domed ceilings typical of southern Piedmont. Each room has a bathroom with shower or bathtub – all atmospherically designed with light or dark marble or historical décor. An appealing balance between old and new, solid materials and bright, light colours and details.

What to do

Hiking, biking, exploring Mombaldone and the surrounding villages, relaxing, reading, cooking and enjoying the many specialities of Piedmont (from white truffles to porcini mushrooms and Piedmont hazelnuts), there are numerous wineries for tasting regional wines, excursions to Alba, Acqui Terme or to Savona by the sea (approx. 1 hour away by car).

Why we like this house

Medieval frescoes, timeless marble and modern art - an impressive and elegant interplay of different eras.
