Could there be “more Mal­lorca”? Hardly. Casa al Mar is situated on a hillside over­looking Port de Sóller, the port town con­nected to Sóller by the legendary tram. The area around Sóller is called the “Valley of Gold”—first because of the olives, then because of the oranges that were shipped from here all the way to France. At the end of the 19th century, a tree disease turned Sóller into a town of emi­grants, but returnees from France and the Caribbean arrived, bringing with them money and archi­tec­tural styles. To this day, Sóller remains—after Palma—the second most important Modernism city in Mal­lorca, fea­turing facades by Gaudí’s student Joan Rubió i Bellver.

But new archi­tecture is also emerging: on the hillside above the nearly cir­cular bay, interior designer Anke Schei­deler has created a Cubist house that com­bines con­tem­porary forms with tra­di­tional materials—spanning 180 square meters of living space spread over two floors. The open-concept living area, fea­turing a kitchen and dining space, opens onto a 60-square-meter terrace with an outdoor kitchen. The house accom­mo­dates six people—all bed­rooms are air-con­di­tioned.

The real high­light, however, is ups­tairs, where the view takes centre stage: a 120-square-meter rooftop terrace with mul­tiple levels, a pool with a teak deck, and a pergola fea­turing an outdoor kitchen and lounge area. From here, you can look out over the harbour to the sea—and enjoy sunsets that are spec­ta­cular in both summer and winter.

During the colder months, the house is heated by under­floor heating, and a wood-burning fire­place in the living room adds to the cosy atmosphere—making Casa al Mar a wort­hwhile desti­nation year-round. It’s a pleasant five-minute walk down the hill to the beach, the market, and the cafés at the harbour.

What to do

Right outside the door: go for a swim, stroll along the promenade, or take the historic tram to Sóller. A little further afield: hike in the crisp light of the Serra de Tramuntana, visit the Botanical Garden in Sóller, or take the Orange Express to Palma. Road cyclists will find one of Europe’s best riding areas in the Tramuntana Mountains.

Charging station for electric vehicles. You can get here by train from Palma—the historic narrow-gauge railway to Sóller and the tram to Port de Sóller are an experience in themselves.
