Like a surreal mirror landscape, the vast water basins merge into a mosaic of orange, pink, brown and violet tones, while hills of piled-up salt rise up like sugar loaves. The salt flats of Sa Vall and Colònia de Sant Jordi in the south of Mallorca are not only a spectacular backdrop, they date back to the 4th century BC and give Ses Salines its name – a somewhat remote village just a few kilometres from the natural beach of Es Trenc, the town of Santanyí and many other beaches and attractions.
Mallorca is considered a microcosm of contrasts, and Casa Esperança is among the island’s hidden retreats. Its location alone makes it special: in the heart of Ses Salines, yet secluded by a wall of local Marès sandstone. The old stone walls of the triangular property served as the starting point for the project, which was realised by the Madrid-based firm ABM Arquitectos and Kinzo Architekten from Berlin. The design completes the rudimentary wall to form a patio, into which the angled bungalow fits like a boomerang, creating different open spaces.
While the house presents a deliberately restrained and closed exterior, it opens up to the south onto a long saltwater pool and a garden with an old olive tree and Mediterranean plants.
The left wing of the building houses a spacious living room with ceiling heights of up to 3.20 metres and a window front facing the garden. The right wing, which is a few steps higher, has four double bedrooms, also with access to the terrace. All rooms offer a view of the historic Ses Salines mill, which rises behind the stone wall and tells the story of the place.
Inside the house, materials such as Marès stone, smoked oak, white surfaces and design classics underline the concept of simple elegance. Only the red stools, the brown tones and the pastel-coloured evening light stand out against the white walls – as if the salt pans were a box of colours that are being remixed in Casa Esperança.
