Once the main city and cul­tural, Moorish centre of the region, Silves is today a rather cosy little town in the hin­terland, just a few kilo­metres from the popular Por­tu­guese coast and the Serra de Mon­chique nature reserve. The holiday home Casa Joana — named after its architect Joana Dalmau Pinto — is located in the heart of the his­toric centre, in a quiet alley near the imposing castle. It is hard to imagine today that just a few years ago there was a ruin here that used to be a stable. From the outside, the simple façade doesn’t reveal that behind it hides an archi­tec­tu­rally exciting, bright and spa­cious house in mini­malist style, with high, nested rooms and three spec­ta­cular ter­races.

Casa Joana offers space, peace and quiet for six guests to dis­cover the Algarve. In addition to a bedroom with a bathroom on the ground floor, there are two further bed­rooms with small but cosy bath­rooms on the first floor.
The large kitchen flows seam­lessly into a lounge with a cosy yellow sofa and a fire­place for cooler days. The white walls not only serve as fur­niture and shelves, but also open up unusual per­spec­tives time and again. This effect is har­mo­niously com­ple­mented by the carefully com­posed interior of colourful art, sophisti­cated design and handmade ceramics.

As the ground floor can be opened up com­pletely to the front and rear, the living space can be extended directly to the outside. Each of the three ter­races, greened with tro­pical plants, takes on a dif­ferent function: while the small pool on the front terrace invites you to have breakfast, the rear terrace has an outdoor kitchen and a large table where you can cook and eat tog­ether, accom­panied by the chirping of the birds. For an ape­ritif in the sun, a shower in the open air or a glass of wine in the evening, it is best to visit the lounge on the roof terrace with a view over Silves and the starry sky.

What to do

Excursions to the beaches (10 - 15 minutes away by car), swimming and surfing, walks along the Rio Arade, discovering flamingos, hiking in the Serra de Monchique nature reserve, a visit to the Castelo and the cathedral of Silves, enjoying culinary specialties (just a few steps away are many nice restaurants and stores), depending on the season there is sometimes live music in the evening, golfing, excursions to Faro, Lagos, Portimão, Lagoa or Carvoeiro
