Ferienhaus Casa Lambertucci in Genzano di Roma / IT – Italy

Holiday home Casa Lambertucci

Situated on Via Appia Vecchia, between Genzano and Lanuvio, Casa Lambertucci nestles in the volcanic hills of the Castelli Romani, not far from Rome. Designed in 1976 by Alfredo Lambertucci – a pioneering Italian architect of the 20th century – for himself and his family, the house is a manifesto of his research and teaching at the University of Rome. Lambertucci, who spent his life exploring the theme of living, created an architectural gem here.

What makes Casa Lambertucci special is its understated yet highly powerful presence. Rather than dominating the landscape, the house blends into the hillside via a truncated cone-shaped recess, so as not to obstruct the view of the sea and the horizon. The architecture, simple in both form and structure, plays on the principle of addition and subtraction: a compact structure comprising two long, parallel walls, covered by a barrel vault and complemented by two striking organic forms – a central, cylindrical staircase and a fireplace. At the same time, a recess in the basement creates a covered terrace.

The entrance reverses the traditional hierarchy and is accessed via a narrow bridge on the upper floor, where the bedrooms and bathrooms are located. The living area is situated one floor below on the ground floor. Both levels are connected by the spiral staircase and the fireplace, which also serve as sculptural elements within the interior, structuring the space. From the living room with its open-plan kitchen, one looks across the open portico directly into Lambertucci’s former study, which still invites one to take a small or grand leap of faith.

Alongside the minimalist furnishings, most of which were designed by the architect himself, the use of light is a central design element, thought through down to the last detail. Large windows and vertical glass block elements flood the foyer and living area with natural light, creating an atmospheric connection between the rooms. This is enhanced by colourful patterns and art, whose combination transports you through time.

In 2023, architect Giorgio Massaccesi restored the house, whilst preserving Lambertucci’s original vision. Casa Lambertucci thus remains not only a testimony to 1970s architecture, but also a vibrant source of inspiration – a bespoke retreat that captures the very essence of living.
