Beyond the Tagus River and bustling Lisbon lies a sparsely populated landscape with nature reserves, miles of beaches, vast farmland and salt lagoons where storks and flamingos wade – the Alentejo. Like its surroundings, the Casa Lia holiday home is an invitation to slow down. Located 1.5 hours from the Portuguese capital and just a few minutes from the region’s trendy beaches, this modern white bungalow is situated in a quiet residential area between the villages of Carvalhal and Comporta.
The two superimposed and intertwined structures turn towards the contemplative nature that begins directly at the property line like two silent observers. In their centre: a terrace oriented towards the sea. Here you can enjoy breakfast under the pergola, let the day drift by on daybeds, cool off in the pool or marvel at the sunset. Complete with barbecues and chilling out under the starry sky.
The rooms, designed by owner and interior designer Silke Ulbrich-Käferlein, reflect the tranquillity and serenity of the Alentejo region. Large windows, minimalist furniture and purist materials such as wood, linen, cement tiles and terrazzo create a relaxed atmosphere. This is combined with a restrained colour palette that draws directly from nature – light beige to brown tones with black accents, such as the fireplace or the bar stools in the open-plan living, dining and kitchen area, which is located in one of the two wings. The other wing houses four bedrooms, including a master suite, and two bathrooms, ideal for holidays with family or a small group of friends.
Those who want to extend the long summer days can immerse themselves in wild waves, the lifestyle of beach clubs or the lively villages of Comporta and Carvalhal, just a few minutes’ drive away. After all, it is not only the two buildings that are located here, but also relaxation and leisure activities that lie arm in arm.
