chez mone&harry

chez mone&harry

Not far from Merano, between green orchards, vineyards and alpine views, lies the loft chez mone&harry, which was created by the experimental designer Harry Thaler and conceived down to the last detail. The native South Tyrolean is not only the creator, but also the host together with his partner Mone.

Through a modern annexe, where the family itself lives, one enters the sensitively renovated loft, which is characterised by its warm atmosphere and minimalist design. From the architecture to the interior, there is a subtle interplay of organic shapes, natural materials and unique objects designed especially for the loft. Like the round dining table or the sculptural lamps and washbasins – each 3D printed from concrete. Even the simple, wool-covered daybed is one of a kind. Opposites attract, light tones meet dark accents, monumental concrete meets filigree, velvet-covered chairs and clear walls meet textured sisal carpet. The curved steps can be used both as seating and as storage space and hold a multilingual library.

The loft on the edge of the historic village centre of Algund is only a five-minute drive from the Mediterranean flair town of Merano and is suitable for two people. The open-plan loft feels like a cocoon and is divided into a spacious living room with an autumn-red kitchen and an adjoining bedroom, separated only by a black wooden screen. The entire apartment is pared down and furnished with sustainable materials and utensils. The large window front gives the rooms light and extends the living space to the west with a terrace. Here, in summer, you will not only enjoy the sun and the view of the Texelgruppe mountain range well into the evening, but you can also take a shower under the starry sky.

What to do

In summer, wonderful hiking trails in Vellau, the Algunder Waalweg, numerous bike trails as well as the village outdoor pool and a tennis sand court provide exercise. In winter, the skiing areas for snow hiking, cross-country skiing and skiing are about 30 to 40 minutes away by car. The proximity to Merano (five minutes by car) makes it possible to visit the thermal baths and the picturesque spa town with a wealth of culinary and cultural experiences at any time of the year.

Although both come from the Merano area, product designer Harry Thaler and contemporary art curator Simone Mair first met in London. Together with their children Noam and Lean, they have been living in South Tyrol again since 2015, in Algund near Merano. For his projects, the designer has transformed a former silo in Lana into a five-storey office where all architecture-interested and curious guests are welcome.
