An urban loft ambience in an historic barn! Located in a village near Freiburg im Breisgau, this listed barn dating from 1824, with an adjoining new building from 2023, is now welcoming holiday guests – the farm animals having long since moved out. Melanie Thoma and her husband Ron van Es have completely rebuilt and restored the building Melanie inherited from her grandparents. Eight holiday apartments and a lounge have been created.
Traditional rural elements such as old timber beams and stone walls are combined with fair-faced concrete and open floor plans. The 35 to 150 sqm apartments consist of a living room with a kitchen, one to two open bedrooms and a modern bathroom. They also include a roofed outdoor area. The apartments are characterised by their urban aesthetic and feature furniture classics testament to the owners’ passion for design.
The street-facing lounge with its broad windows, rustic half-timbered walls and comfy atmosphere will invite you to recline on the Chesterfield sofa, perch on the windowsills or at the dining table, and leaf through books drinking speciality coffee while the kids are busy with the available toys.
What to do
The barn is located at the centre of Gundelfingen, on the outskirts of Freiburg. Shops, restaurants, recreational activities, playgrounds and public transport are all within walking distance. Freiburg can be reached in 15 minutes by tram. Numerous hiking and biking trails invite you to discover the surroundings (for example Markgräflerland, Kaiserstuhl, Glottertal, the Black Forest, Europa Park, Alsace and Switzerland) and you can even go skiing or golfing.

Wer die Beschreibung in der Urlaubsarchitektur genau liest und sich die Fotos genau ansieht, bekommt absolut schon den richtigen Eindruck von diesem wunderbaren Ort in Gundelfingen. Im Grunde gibt es nichts hinzuzufügen, wir haben alles so vorgefunden und können alles bestätigen. Wir haben ein paar Tage hier verbracht und haben uns „sauwohlgefühlt“.
Natürlich ist vieles Geschmacksache aber allein die Liebe von Melanie und Ron zum Detail sind grossartig und trifft unseren Geschmack auf den Punkt.
Die Liebe zum Detail findet sich aber nicht nur im Gebäude und den Wohnungen, sondern auch in einem kleinen, liebevoll zusammengestellten digitalen Reiseführer wieder, der mit der Buchungsbestätigung verschickt wird. Er beinhaltet viele Tipps für die Bereiche Kultur, Ausflüge, Gastronomie, Freizeit, etc.
Melanie und Ron als Gastgeber immer ansprechbar, hilfsbereit, herzlich und kreativ.
Die absolut gute Lage der Scheune wurde ebenfalls schon erwähnt. Sie bietet insgesamt eine wohltuende, erfrischende, kreative und inspirierende Alternative zu den uniformen Business-Hotels der Umgebung.
Wir waren heuer mit 2 weiteren Familien ( mit einigen kleinen Kindern) bei Ron und es hat uns sehr gut gefallen. Der kleine abgezäunte Garten und das Kiesbeet vor der Tür war optimal für die Kids zum Spielen. Es gibt auch viele interessante Kunstobjekte am Anwesen zu entdecken, nicht zu vergessen die vielen Stühle und Sesseln, die eine Leidenschaft des Hausherren darstellen. Er hat uns auch die Welt der Eames Chairs näher gebracht. Erst nach dem Besuch des Vitra Campus konnten wir erkennen, dass die Appartments ein quasi einen Vitra Showroom darstellen — nur eben im Live Modus. Wir haben uns rundum wohlgefühlt bei Ron und sogar einmal sein wunderbares Frühstück in der Werkstatt geniessen können.
Der Aufenthalt bei Melanie und Ron war großartig. Die 70 m² Wohnung in der alten Scheune ist architektonisch großartig gelöst und sehr geschmackvoll eingerichtet mit einer Mischung aus modernen Elementen und Design-Klassikern, dazu viele tolle Bücher. Das Frühstück im angeschlossenen Café ist reduziert, dafür umso hochwertiger mit Müsli, Smoothies und frischem Brot vom Bäcker. Man kommt mit den beiden schnell ins Gespräch und fühlt sich sofort pudelwohl. Auch die Lage der Scheune ist nahezu perfekt, weil man in wenigen Minuten in der Innenstadt in Freiburg ist oder eben auch in der Natur. Ein toller Ort, den man so vielleicht im Schwarzwald gar nicht erwarten würde. Wir werden wiederkommen!
