The holiday home for four people is located on the outskirts of Hitzacker, a pretty half-timbered town in the northern Wendland region, just a stroll away from the banks of the Elbe and the Elbe cycle path. With its functional form and clear architecture, the single-storey building constructed from prefabricated timber frame elements creates a gentle transition between the residential and forest landscape. The property merges with the forest without seams or fences.
While the modular efficiency and aesthetics of the house are reminiscent of a simple hut at first glance, the square floor plan opens up a generous, bright spatial experience inside. The central element of the layout is a freestanding, brick-built ‘functional cube’, which forms the core of the building, housing the technical infrastructure and two bathrooms and arranging the open-plan living area around it. At times a retreat, at times a place for socialising. Along the southern side of the cube is a well-equipped kitchenette with an oversized long table and bright red-orange chairs, which set the tone already from the outside. Moving clockwise, there is a sofa and TV lounge, a sideboard with over 300 books, a reading chair and desk as well as two bedrooms with minimalist furnishings, one with a white bed, the other with a bright red one. In addition to a large bathroom with bathtub, there is a second shower room – both with skylights and special lighting moods. The large floor-to-ceiling windows create a flowing connection to the surrounding landscape and evoke a sense of lightness. Combined with larch wood, textile elements, such as the huge theatrical curtains in rich yellow, and other homely highlights – from colourful book spines to cheerful carpets.
If you’re looking for a sporty change of pace, you can grab a table tennis or badminton racket, stretch out on the yoga mat or go for a walk in the countryside. In the garden, or rather in the forest right outside the door, there is a dining table with garden chairs, sun loungers and a parasol. And even those who want to work will have plenty of peace and space to do so.
