‘126 km to the Alemagna‘ – the historic road to Venice – indicates the original inscription on the typically red-painted façade that characterises the ANAS buildings. Originally built at the turn of the century by the Austrian Imperial and Royal Monarchy on the outskirts of Dobbiaco, the building became the headquarters of the Italian National Road Authority (Azienda Nazionale Autonoma delle Strade) after the First World War. After lying uninhabited for decades and being reclaimed by nature, it underwent a renaissance in 2024.
The architecture visibly blends the rough, historic structure with clean, modern accents: the façade has remained virtually unchanged apart from two minor alterations; inside, the house has been largely gutted, with only essential details retained, such as the preserved wall paintings, old door frames, stone walls and stove doors. To conceal the modern technology, the concrete ceiling was formworked using boards from the existing structure and now displays the imprint of the wood grain. The wooden floors and furniture – from the kitchen to the staircase – are also made from materials taken from the original structure and emphasise the house’s authenticity.
As a meeting place and venue for private events, extended families, meetings or sports groups, ANAS 126 offers everything you need for socialising and activities: a large living area with a wood-burning stove, an Alpine library and a fully equipped kitchen invite you to spend time together. Five bedrooms with ten beds and several bathrooms ensure comfort. The south-facing garden, complete with a table, bench, covered pizza oven and barbecue, extends the living space outdoors. Thanks to its own water source, solar panels and pellet heating system, the house is completely self-sufficient.
As well as its varied spaces, ANAS 126 offers an inspiring journey through time, bridging the past and the present, and serves as an excellent starting point for alpine adventures – whether hiking, mountain biking, climbing, ice bathing, ski touring or guided mountain tours, everything begins right on the doorstep.
