Whether for breakfast or dinner, on one of the larch-wood ter­races or from the airy living area, the view through the pan­o­ramic windows across the fjord-like Lake Traunsee to the Höl­len­ge­birge is an expe­rience at any time of day and from every angle. The Moosberg holiday home is situated above Gmunden on the slopes of the Grünberg, right on the edge of the forest, in a peaceful setting sur­rounded by pas­tures with cows and black­berry bushes. A location in the heart of the most beau­tiful natural sur­roun­dings, which must be pre­served – and from which the sculp­tural archi­tecture draws its inspi­ration.

As nature con­ser­vation regu­la­tions divide the plot dia­go­nally and limit the buildable area, architect Christoph Opperer turned this cons­traint into a design concept. The result is a tri­an­gular, fan-shaped structure that blends into the topo­graphy and land­scape, makes optimal use of its open spaces and deli­berately directs the view towards the lake, moun­tains and forest. Due to the sloping site, the basement and ground floor were con­s­tructed from rein­forced con­crete, whilst the upper floor and the roof are made of timber.

Spanning appro­xi­m­ately 200 square metres of living space, the house extends over three levels. Thanks to the sloping site, the basement also fea­tures fully-fledged living spaces with direct access to the garden. At the heart of the house is the spa­cious living area on the ground floor. The kitchen, dining area and living room flow seam­lessly into one another. A sculp­tural staircase with an inte­grated bookshelf con­nects the levels and struc­tures the space without dividing it.

A par­ti­cu­larly striking feature is the excep­tional ceiling height in the living area; above the living room, the building opens up all the way to the upper floor. With three bed­rooms, the house can accom­modate up to six people.

The design com­bines mini­malist aes­thetics with local craft­smanship: exposed con­crete and polished screed meet oak fur­niture, reclaimed timber floors, white walls and carefully sel­ected colourful objects and home access­ories. The fur­nis­hings blend clean lines with antique charm. This creates a warm atmo­sphere that bridges tra­dition and modernity, suited to a wide range of indi­vidual needs, weather con­di­tions and seasons. From the garden to the seating areas on the ter­races to reading on the bright blue sofa – the natural spec­tacle of Lake Traunsee and the Höl­len­ge­birge moun­tains is always part of the expe­rience. If you’re looking for some exercise, the best thing to do is set off on a walk straight away or fetch the bike you’ve brought with you from the property’s own bike garage – and you’ll be down by the lake in no time at all.
