Whether for breakfast or dinner, on one of the larch-wood terraces or from the airy living area, the view through the panoramic windows across the fjord-like Lake Traunsee to the Höllengebirge is an experience at any time of day and from every angle. The Moosberg holiday home is situated above Gmunden on the slopes of the Grünberg, right on the edge of the forest, in a peaceful setting surrounded by pastures with cows and blackberry bushes. A location in the heart of the most beautiful natural surroundings, which must be preserved – and from which the sculptural architecture draws its inspiration.
As nature conservation regulations divide the plot diagonally and limit the buildable area, architect Christoph Opperer turned this constraint into a design concept. The result is a triangular, fan-shaped structure that blends into the topography and landscape, makes optimal use of its open spaces and deliberately directs the view towards the lake, mountains and forest. Due to the sloping site, the basement and ground floor were constructed from reinforced concrete, whilst the upper floor and the roof are made of timber.
Spanning approximately 200 square metres of living space, the house extends over three levels. Thanks to the sloping site, the basement also features fully-fledged living spaces with direct access to the garden. At the heart of the house is the spacious living area on the ground floor. The kitchen, dining area and living room flow seamlessly into one another. A sculptural staircase with an integrated bookshelf connects the levels and structures the space without dividing it.
A particularly striking feature is the exceptional ceiling height in the living area; above the living room, the building opens up all the way to the upper floor. With three bedrooms, the house can accommodate up to six people.
The design combines minimalist aesthetics with local craftsmanship: exposed concrete and polished screed meet oak furniture, reclaimed timber floors, white walls and carefully selected colourful objects and home accessories. The furnishings blend clean lines with antique charm. This creates a warm atmosphere that bridges tradition and modernity, suited to a wide range of individual needs, weather conditions and seasons. From the garden to the seating areas on the terraces to reading on the bright blue sofa – the natural spectacle of Lake Traunsee and the Höllengebirge mountains is always part of the experience. If you’re looking for some exercise, the best thing to do is set off on a walk straight away or fetch the bike you’ve brought with you from the property’s own bike garage – and you’ll be down by the lake in no time at all.
