The VValter holiday home in the north of Berlin is part of the Summt estate and is located right next to the former manor house in a spacious, wild garden with old trees that stretches all the way to Lake Summt. The largely listed property is located amidst the forests and lakes of the Niederbarnim landscape conservation area. It offers an exciting contrast to the nearby, vibrant capital, which can be reached in no time by car, S-Bahn or bicycle.
In order to breathe new life into the former 19th-century administrator’s house without destroying the traces of the past, the brick ruin was renovated by installing a house-within-a-house. This fits into the historic shell like a wooden box and houses two holiday flats: ‘Am See’ (By the Lake) and ‘In der Sonne’ (In the Sun). While the patinated walls form the spatial and aesthetic framework, the new wooden box contrasts radically with the old walls with its clean lines and light, warm materials. In between, there is a weather-protected, variable space that extends the apartments as desired and mediates between inside and outside.
Both residential units can accommodate four people each and are equipped with two bedrooms, two bathrooms and a spacious kitchen-diner. The generous sliding glass doors on the ground floor can be opened almost completely, creating a light and airy atmosphere. The outdoor areas are actively incorporated into the use of the space, such as the outdoor dining areas and the additional outdoor kitchen.
The bedrooms on the upper floor serve as a closed retreat, but also offer varied views of the landscape through differently proportioned openings in the masonry, making the space between them accessible and enjoyable thanks to balconies.
The historic brick walls tell the story of the building, while the modern wooden box provides contemporary comfort.
The ‘Am See’ holiday flat is located in the northern part of the former administrator’s house, while the ‘In der Sonne’ flat is in the southern part. Almost all rooms offer a view of Lake Summt. A striking balance between tradition and modernity, seclusion and expansiveness, countryside and city.
