The Bergstrasse-Odenwald mountain range stretches between the Rhine, Main and Neckar rivers – a diverse natural and cultural landscape characterised by dense forests, small towns and a wealth of history. When you reach the little town of Erbach, you are greeted by a magnificent park, which is not only home to a Metzendorf villa, but also to a modern new structure that was originally built as an office building and has now been converted into a holiday home. Here, mighty pines, Douglas firs and swamp oaks tower into the sky, basalt paths lead through bushes, ferns and shrubs and historic sandstone pillars point the way. In order to preserve the scenery of the stately villa and idyllic garden with its old trees, the building is subordinate to its surroundings in terms of height and colour. Clear lines, geometric shapes, large windows, steel and concrete characterise the compact architecture.
The ground floor and basement are characterised by concrete as the material for walls, ceilings and floors, while the upper floor was built as a wooden structure – including an acoustic ceiling made of silver fir. There is one bedroom and bathroom per floor, which, in contrast to the transparent living spaces, promise privacy. On the upper floor, guests can either relax in the living room or plan their next hike through the Odenwald in the study. The additional kitchenette is a relic from the office days.
A steel staircase along the huge window front leads back down to the ground floor, with an open-plan kitchen and two dining and seating areas. The oak sliding doors to the bedroom can be closed for more privacy. From the dining area, another sliding glass door leads out onto the terrace and into the densely overgrown garden.
