Nestled like a peninsula in one of the typical Moselle bends, Trittenheim overlooks the surrounding vineyards. In the middle of the historic town centre, Ramona and Bernd Ludwig have extensively renovated one of the oldest residential buildings after decades of abandonment and reopened it as a guest house. Built in 1723, the traditional slate stone house with its robust structure and characteristic gabled roof embodies the local architecture of the Moselle region. During the renovation, it was important to the owners to preserve the old building fabric as far as possible and to create a contemporary counterpoint by adding dark steel elements.
Klara Rooms – named after the elderly lady who used to live there for a long time – comprises two holiday flats for two people each, a studio on the top floor and a communal area with seating, a kitchenette and a foosball table.
From the outside, the lattice windows and the elaborately restored entrance door catch the eye. Inside, the old stone walls are partly exposed and partly plastered. Materials from the existing building and wooden beams made from 350-year-old oak were reused to create the stairs and furniture. Subtle grey and beige tones contrast with the black of the steel pieces. The interior is modern and minimalist, allowing basalt, oak and slate to take centre stage.
The windows of the flats look out onto the neighbouring houses in the village, with the vineyards behind them. From the Klara Rooms, the Moselle promenade and the banks of the Moselle are just a few minutes’ walk away. For those who are travelling for this reason anyway: The region is home to excellent wines, the steep vineyards ‘Trittenheimer Apotheke’ and ‘Altärchen’ are legendary – the Rieslings that mature there enjoy world fame. The small forecourt of Klara Rooms is an inviting place to round off the evening with a glass of wine.
