Tucked away among the pines: At the Danish Klitmøller Hideaway on the coast of North Jutland, the name says it all. The vast expanse of Thy lies outside the door, while purist wooden architecture brings peace and quiet inside. The luxury of simplicity.

Ferienhaus Klitmøller Hideaway in Klitmøller / DK – Denmark

Holiday home Klitmøller Hideaway

The holiday home is located on the edge of the fishing village of Klitmøller in Cold Hawaii — a paradise for surfers of all disciplines — and neighbours the Danish Thy National Park with its backdrop shaped by wind, sand and sea. Hidden between pine trees and dense vegetation, it follows the classic hideaway concept and offers visitors up to six people a secluded, quiet retreat in the middle of the rugged landscape. The simple but high-quality timber construction focuses on the essentials and utilises the resources of its location. The position of the house was chosen in a way that minimised the number of trees that had to be felled.

At first glance, the building almost looks like a small hamlet with three houses. The architecture takes up the traditional style of a long house and reinterprets it with a staggered centre section. This creates a wind-protected, west-facing terrace and additional windows that fill the living space with light. The largely natural materials refer to the original beauty of the surroundings and come directly from the region. Just like the locally produced windows and bricks. Inside, full-surface pine plywood panelling creates a warm and pleasant atmosphere that connects with the surrounding nature through large and unusually positioned window openings.

The centre section opens up into a large, high-ceilinged room with a well-equipped kitchen, a long dining table and sofa. At each end of the house is a bedroom with a bathroom and, on one side, an attic with another double bed, which can be reached via a steep ladder. The well-thought-out room planning and the simple furniture allow guests to use the house functionally and flexibly — whether as a couple or for a holiday with the family or friends. The wooden fixtures can be turned into a sofa, a bed, a bench or storage space. Even if unnecessary luxury is avoided, comfort is still a priority.

Before heading to the beach for surfing or into the windswept nature of Thy for hiking, you can cook and eat on the recessed terrace with outdoor kitchen and seating or warm up again in the heated whirlpool or sauna after long walks and playing in the waves.

What to do

Cold Hawaii is a paradise for all kinds of surfing (depending on conditions), swimming, beach walks, hiking in Thy National Park, cycling and mountain biking, horse riding, fishing, wildlife watching in Hanstholm Game Reserve and excursions to the region's towns and villages

Why we like this house

Walden sends its regards: shapes, materials and furniture reduced to the essentials make the raw nature appear all the more intense and immediate.

This house is great for

Families, couples or a group of friends. Whether for an active holiday, relaxation or workation. Pets are welcome.

Sustainability

E-charging station at the house, public transport: a bus runs from Thisted to Klitmøller, from here it is about 1 km on foot

Owners of Klitmøller Hideaway

Owner

As Kasper Baarup Holmboe - a keen surfer, architect and founder of Spant Studio Architekter in Aarhus - spends as much time as possible in Thy and Cold Hawaii, he and his three friends have designed and built the Klitmøller Hideaway holiday home. Here, the friends can retreat with their families and enjoy the raw beauty of nature and its elements.

Katharina sagt:
