Klotz am Berg

Holiday home Klotz am Berg

Half-timbered houses, small castles, castle ruins and old mills characterise the landscape around the Vogelsberg, Europe’s largest extinct volcano. Klotz am Berg, located on the outskirts of Freiensteinau, is a holiday home with a compact cubature in monolithic construction, which follows the ‘Einfach Bauen’ concept.

The modest façade is structured by windows of different sizes, complemented by a balcony and entrance made of galvanised steel, which are reminiscent of cantilevered drawbridges or suspension bridges and form an exciting transition into the landscape. It is hard to miss the square as a leitmotif – from the cube to the windows to the tiled mirrors in the kitchen and bathrooms.

In contrast to the restrained grey façade, the interior, which is also clearly structured, is particularly colourful. Green and pink form the common thread, setting accents in the rooms and bathrooms and elevating the gallery and staircase to the status of a sculpture. The light-filled centre of the house is the two-storey, open-plan living room with a huge orangery window that looks directly onto the adjacent stream and the extensive nature reserve. Whether from the sofa, the multifunctional viewing bench or the gallery.

The kitchen is around the corner and yet flows seamlessly into the dining area and the living room with fireplace. Favourite colours help determine the room layout: On the ground floor, lovers of green will enjoy the bedroom and bathroom of the same name. On the gallery, there is a second double bedroom, a bedroom and children’s room with two separate beds and a pink bathroom. Even more greenery awaits outside the door. Here, a largely unspoilt garden with shady fruit trees leads directly into the orchards and the adventure landscape.

What to do

Numerous hiking routes (e.g. on the Vulkanring hiking trail or the Wartenwege) and cycling tours (e.g. the Vulkanradweg or the mountain bike trails), swimming, surfing, stand-up paddling and kayaking at Nieder-Mooser See (only 8 minutes away), birdwatching at the Kinzig reservoir incl. Learning and adventure landscape, visit to Steinau (stage of the German Fairy Tale Route) with a visit to the Brothers Grimm House, climbing in the Europa climbing forest, animal and adventure park, toboggan run on the Hoherodesberg adventure mountain - here you can also go skiing and cross-country skiing in winter, wellness in Herbstein or a trip to Fulda (approx. 30 min. by car)

Why we like this house

Simply special: a bright loft in the countryside, hidden behind a minimalist façade

This house is great for

Families, couples and groups of friends - whether for hiking and cycling, as a break from the city or in the footsteps of the Brothers Grimm

Sustainability

The house is based on the concept of ‘simple building’ (small surface area, monolithic construction using vertically perforated bricks, no thermal bridges, window ventilation instead of additional technical systems, photovoltaic system; EV charging station nearby, public transport: regional express to Steinau an der Straße)
