As bright as the sky, as green as the dune grass, the H-shaped architecture of Kokkolit nestles in the gently rugged landscape of North Jutland. Just 300 metres from the sea and the surfers’ paradise of Cold Hawaii. The extraordinary holiday home in Klitmøller, Denmark, 90 percent of which was built by the owners themselves, is named after its white-coloured base, which blends into the dune landscape: the kokkoliths – small calcareous plates formed over geological time, which are necessary for the formation of limestone and the production of particularly white concrete.
With its 24 corners, the single-storey building has an unusual floor plan which, together with over 40 windows and skylights, some of which are floor-to-ceiling, some circular and some filled with amber, allows nature to be experienced in all directions and bathes the house in a varied play of light. In addition to concrete, the materials are limited to oak, glass and leather.
On entering the house, you have the choice between the main entrance, a microscopically enlarged image of a coccolith, or the wetsuit-ready surfer’s bathroom next to it. The cross-connection of the H-shape forms the centre of the house, where a four-metre-long, self-carved table made of solid oak invites you to eat, think and discuss together. A self-created lamp floats above it, reminiscent of the kayaks in Greenland. The large leather couch opens up pure nature cinema with a view of Thy National Park or into the kitchen. Cooking takes place under the large round skylight, which reflects the powder-coloured linoleum worktop in the northern light.
Each of the four double rooms with “floating” beds is flooded with natural light thanks to the narrow, high windows. Instead of curtains, coccolith-patterned wooden screens can be used to darken the room if desired. An almost theatrical experience that continues in the colourful showers in the three bathrooms, which are almost three metres high and end in large skylights.
The four terraces are sheltered from the wind and weather and offer space for different needs – from morning coffee with a sea view to a quiet reading corner and an apéritif atmosphere. The south courtyard forms the communicative centre of the outdoor areas. The dune grass blows all around while you lift concrete weights or play a round of backgammon, which is set directly into the floor.
