Beau­tifully staged: The ter­raced slope above the medieval village of Mon­taulieu, across which the Les Brumes estate is spread, covers more than one hectare and offers unob­s­tructed pan­o­ramic views of the land­scape from every vantage point. Beau­tiful in every season, the estate reveals a dif­ferent cha­racter throughout the year. Here, in the heart of the Baronnies Pro­ven­çales Regional Nature Park, you don’t just live in nature, but with it – partly under the open sky, yet shel­tered by archi­tecture that blends into the vege­tation.

At the centre of the spa­cious and largely unspoilt grounds stands a cir­cular building designed for couples or families of up to four people. Through the curved glass façade, visitors are embraced by the land­scape and light. The gaze is drawn out­wards, par­ti­cu­larly when the pan­o­ramic windows are open and the interior becomes a stage.
This fluid, tan­gible tran­sition to the out­doors was par­ti­cu­larly important to the designer, Clément Sal­vaire. Ori­gi­nally con­ceived as a retreat for his own family, the project embodies his belief that true luxury lies not in opulent mate­rials, but in harmony with nature. Even the con­s­truction method was designed to minimise dis­ruption to the site’s eco­system, as the timber modules, pre­fa­bri­cated in France, could be erected within a few days.

The main building is as compact as it is well thought-out: an open, light-filled living area with a kitchen and dining area forms the cen­tre­piece, whilst two bed­rooms – a master bedroom and a second room with bunk beds – and a bathroom provide accom­mo­dation for up to four people. In addition, bespoke fur­niture and mate­rials such as wood, stone and linen create a warm, inviting atmo­sphere.

However, the true magic of this special place only unfolds out­doors: winding paths lead across the grounds to further open-air living spaces – from the ter­races tucked away on the hillside, com­plete with an outdoor kitchen and various seating areas, to the heated swimming pool, the small, cir­cular sauna and the boules court. Every feature on the pro­perty has been posi­tioned to capture the beauty of the sur­roun­dings and the views, whilst creating an oasis of tran­quillity. Whether you’re cooking amidst the greenery, playing a round of pétanque, prac­tising yoga or simply day­d­re­aming in a deck­chair. A vast natural stage full of won­derful views and adven­tures, both big and small.

What to do

In truth, the varied spaces and opportunities at Les Brumes are entertainment enough in themselves. If you’re looking for a change of pace alongside swimming, enjoying the sauna, relaxing or cooking outdoors, you can explore the nature park on foot or by bike straight from the property, or visit the surrounding villages with their Provençal markets, olive oil mills, vineyards and craft workshops. Nyons, the region’s historic capital, is also just a fifteen-minute drive away.

During the first COVID-19 lockdown in 2020, Clément Salvaire, co-founder of the family-run company Lumipod (a modular architectural system), set out to find a place where he could realise his vision: a retreat that combines minimalism, design and comfort whilst reconnecting with nature. Originally conceived as a retreat for his own family, Les Brumes, situated in the heart of the Baronnies Provençales, is now open to anyone longing for peace and a connection with nature.
