Film tip: The first museum of modernism

Art for all — with this impulse, Karl Ernst Osthaus founded the Museum Folkwang in the West German indus­trial city of Hagen in 1902 as the first museum of modern art.

Until his early death, he had Henry van de Velde at his side as a long-time com­panion, who not only planned the interior design of the museum and the private resi­dence, but also intro­duced Osthaus to the French Impres­sio­nists.

The 52-minute ARTE docu­mentary explores the life and work of the young pioneer and art patron, who was an important reformer and cul­tural mediator of his time.
