Schloss Prossen (Prossen Castle) is a holiday residence in a former manor house in Saxon Switzerland—situated only 300 metres from the river Elbe and close to the spa town of Bad Schandau. The centuries-old building looks back on an eventful history and was in a dilapidated state when Jutta and Torsten Wiesner bought it in 2014. From 2017 to 2019, the conversion and extensive renovation of the listed property was carried out under the direction of the Dresden-based architectural firm schoper.schoper. The original building structure with its spacious halls was exposed, the roof truss was newly constructed, murals on the walls and ceilings dating from the Renaissance period and the Baroque stucco ceilings were restored, and old floors were refurbished. New additions such as the stair tower have been designed in such a way that they are not perceived as a contrast to the existing building.
The furniture, however, sets a clear counterpoint to the historical ambience. Instead of chandeliers and antiques, the furniture is modern, straightforward and gives the rooms an ambience that is both elegant and casual. The apartments and suites have a loft-like character: all have open-plan living, dining and cooking areas, some extend on two levels and have sleeping galleries, while in other apartments, room-dividing furniture designed specifically for the manor house separates the various functions.
The Garden Hall and the Fireplace Hall are open to all guests. The vaulted cellar, where a wellness area with Finnish and bio-sauna is located in the former castle kitchen, invites guests to relax. The manor house is surrounded by a park with old trees—from the historical pavilion you have a view of the nearby river Elbe as well as the Lilienstein, one of the most striking mountains of the Elbe Sandstone Mountains.
