Staindlhof 1680

Apartment // Holiday home Staindlhof 1680

The Staindlhof is situated at an altitude of 820 metres in a stand-alone location above Waldkirchen. A secluded mountain meadow surrounded by dense forests and with sweeping views over the hilly landscape of the Bavarian Forest. The ensamble, built in 1680, has been in the family for 345 years. A modest farmstead with a residential building and stable, which was extended in 1907 to include a hay barn. This makes the typical Waldlerhaus one of the oldest of its kind still standing in the region.

In recent years, the listed farmhouse has been renovated with great respect for its historical heritage and transformed into two holiday flats. During the renovation, only irreparable parts were visibly replaced; new areas of use were integrated into the historic cubature as a house-within-a-house concept. The result is modern interiors and exciting transitions and spaces between the shell and the fixtures.

The Waldlerhaus, which has always played a central role as the family home, continues to rely on its authentic atmosphere and its elements, such as the open staircase, the quarry stone wall in the bathroom, the granite floor in the former stable or the cosy parlour. Modern glass fronts bring additional light and lightness into the historic structure. The hay barn, formerly a storage room for straw and hay, is now an independent, bright house-within-a-house.

Both flats focus on materials that were used in the past – from wood and granite to steel and glass. Complemented by carpentry furniture made from the oak from their own property or old wooden beams that have been converted into furniture. A freestanding bathtub in the bedroom, a wood-burning stove for warm evenings and a large eat-in kitchen add contemporary comfort to the historic setting.

Right outside the door, visitors are greeted not only by fantastic natural surroundings, but also another surprise: where grain was once stored and bread baked, there is now the Backhaus Spa with its own sauna and hot tub, as well as a variety of seating and outdoor areas all around, including a garden, meadow and private forest.

What to do

Enjoy the peace and quiet, hiking on the Dreisessel, in the Bavarian Forest National Park or shorter tours in and around Waldkirchen, biking in the Danube-Moldau cycling area, swimming at various lakes or in the Karoli bathing park, skiing, cross-country skiing and tobogganing in winter, excursions to Waldkirchen and Passau, culinary highlights of the region

Owner

Great-aunt Maria lived at the Staindlhof until 2019 at the proud age of 95, after which Florian Hartl took it over in the long family tradition and renovated it together with his husband Florian Gugenhan with great sensitivity, flair and a keen interest in architecture, interior design and landscaping. Inspired by many travels and fond childhood memories, the two, who are originally in the healthcare industry, have preserved this special place and carefully brought it into the present day for their guests.
