Mountains in sight: the Stelzenhaus (stilt house) at the foot of the Chiemgau Alps is a ‘tree house’ for anyone looking to get away from it all. The result is relaxation for the senses surrounded by greenery.

Ferienhaus Stelzenhaus in Chiemgau, Schleching / DE – Germany, Bavaria

Holiday home Stelzenhaus

At first glance, the elevated wooden house on the outskirts of Schleching – a small village in the Bavarian Achental valley not far from Lake Chiemsee – is reminiscent of the pile dwellings of prehistoric times, the fishermen’s huts on the Atlantic coast or a tree house. Traditional elements that the Munich-based architecture studio arnhard und eck has taken up and combined with modern construction methods, contemporary design and a sustainable approach. Simple and light-footed in design, without superfluous furniture, televisions and fuss, yet with everything you need.

The building, constructed from local wood, is based on point foundations that seal as little surface area as possible, with views towards Breitenstein, Gscheurerwand and Hochgern. The directly adjacent buildings are hidden from view. Access is from the garden via a small cloakroom and staircase leading up to a bright living room. Here, on the south side, the sun shines from morning to evening into the communal area with kitchen, small fireplace, large dining table and long, wide window sills, surrounded by the Alpine panorama. The gallery above can be used as a reading room, play area or bedroom. The two further double bedrooms and the two bathrooms are separate.

All rooms focus on the essentials – from the warm, light wood panelling to the understated furnishings with matching fixtures and occasional designer pieces. While the colour scheme inside is limited to a few accents, the grey façade with red shutters is reminiscent of a tree house and makes an almost tongue-in-cheek statement.

The balcony is an inviting place to have breakfast, while the garden offers another dining area and an outdoor shower. For an afternoon nap or a break in the shade, you can make yourself comfortable in the hammocks between the stilts – unless a table tennis or basketball match is in progress, that is. For all other activities, nature begins right outside the door.
