At first, you might be slightly surprised by the name: “Steinhaus (stone house) am Auerbach”. This Steinhaus in the Bavarian town of Oberaudorf looks like a wooden house from the outside, but is in fact a massive stone building with 80 cm thick walls. Thanks to its timber cladding, however, it blends in perfectly with the surrounding houses. Christine Arnhard and Markus Eck are masters at building on small surface areas with unusual spatial concepts – as they proved beyond question with their previous project, the “Holzhaus (wooden house) am Auerbach”, with which the Steinhaus shares the property. Once again, the building’s floor plan is far from standard.
The parking space is located in a “cut” corner of the house, behind which the entrance area opens with a glass-panelled front. The bedrooms are on the ground floor together with two bathrooms, a sauna and a reading room complete with a fireplace. Under the roof you will find the living room, as well as the kitchen with a dining area and access to the large roof terrace. The interior design – with linoleum floors, and solid wood and clay-plastered walls in muted colours – creates a quiet, relaxed ambience.

What to do
The house gives you direct access to nature. In winter: skiing, touring, tobogganing, skating, winter hiking, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, jogging, as well as short and longer walks. In summer: hiking, high ropes courses, natural swimming spots, mountain biking, jogging, tennis, sailing and kiting (at the Chiemsee lake), water skiing (Kiefersfelden), horseback riding and golf. Various destinations for excursions: Lake Chiemsee (35 km), Rosenheim (31 km), Kufstein (8 km), Lake Schliersee (36 km), Lake Tegernsee (61 km ) or Kitzbühel (48 km). Culture: the new Festspielhaus in Erl (festival venue), the Musikfilmtage Oberaudorf (music film festival), the Bad Endorf cinema, cultural events in the castle Neubeuern or Architectural tours in Tyrol.

Liebe Familie Arnhard & Eck, wir haben wunderschöne Tage im Steinhaus verbracht. Es blieben keine Wünsche offen. Ihr habt ein echtes Kleinod geschaffen. Wir haben uns rundum Wohl gefühlt. Wir kommen wieder, Anfrage ist bereits raus an euch. Ganz liebe Grüße und bis bald hoffentlich 💫
Zusammen mit guten Freundinnen wollte ich ein gemeinsames Wochenende verbringen, aber nicht einfach irgendwo. Da wir uns alle zusammen nicht oft sehen, haben wir nach einem Ort gesucht, der besonders ist, intensive und schöne Erinnerungen kreiert sowie Raum für gute Gespräche öffnet. Im Steinhaus konnten wir all das erleben und darüberhinaus waren das Interior, die Architektur und der gesamte Vibe des Hauses eine große Inspiration. Ich hätte den ganzen Tag in einem der Sitzfenster verbringen können.
Christine und ihre Familie sind tolle Gastgeber*innen, die es schaffen einem das Gefühl zu geben, jederzeit zur Stelle und hilfsbereit zu sein und uns gleichzeitig trotzdem komplett Raum für uns gegeben haben. Die Grundausstattung im ganzen Haus ist liebevoll und schlau mit gedacht. Außerdem sieht vom Seifenspender, über die Pfeffermühle bis hin zum Akkustaubsauger einfach alles stylisch aus und ist dazu extrem ordentlich und sauber organisiert/verstaut. Zusammen mit der idyllischen Umgebung, Natur und gut erreichbaren Lage, war die Auszeit für uns genau das, was wir gebraucht haben und wer hoffen sehr, noch einmal wiederkommen zu können. Vielen lieben Dank an Christine und ihre Familie!
Fantastic people! We were really looking forward to our holiday at the Steinhaus but the Corona crisis made it impossible. Christine and Markus immediately refunded our deposit without any delay and with zero fuss. We are still looking forward to that holiday, but later.… Hope you are both well!
Wir haben einen wundervollen Urlaub im Steinhaus am Auerbach verbracht. Das Haus mit seinem außergewöhnlichen Grundriss, den vielen Sitzfenstern, der geschmackvollen Einrichtung und der komfortablen Ausstattung war uns ein gemütliches Nest, in das wir nach unseren Ausflügen stets mit viel Freude zurückgekehrt sind. Sehr schön ist auch die Lage direkt am Auerbach, der an warmen Tage zum Baden einlädt. Die Umgebung — am Fuße der Alpen, nahe Österreich und dem Chiemsee — bietet viele Ausflugsmöglichkeiten. Eine Woche war viel zu kurz, wir fahren wieder hin!
