On the coast of Thy, Denmark’s largest national park, the wild sea merges seamlessly into the waves of the densely overgrown dunes. There is neither beginning nor end in sight here. Only now and then do old fishermen’s huts and small villages appear along the endless stretch of coast, also known as the surfers’ paradise of Cold Hawaii.
In the midst of this landscape, on a secluded 9,900 m² plot of land, stands the Vipp Cold Hawaii – a historic fisherman’s house from 1900 that has been completely reconstructed and transformed into a modern holiday home by the young Danish architect couple Ebbe Lavsen and Caroline Hahn from hahnlavsen studio. Like all guest houses from the Danish design brand Vipp, the reinterpreted fisherman’s house in Thy takes up a regional archetype and focuses on the dialogue between object and space. In keeping with its location, the building defies the forces of nature with elegance and blends into its surroundings with all its simplicity.
The essential design principle was the limitation to five materials: the walls are made of whitewashed brickwork, the roof of untreated Douglas fir. The huge glass walls are sheltered from the outside and open up the rooms inside to the vastness of nature. The brick floors laid with sand look like a continuation of the long sandy beaches in front of the large windows. As a traditional element, each room features classic oak stable doors, reminiscent of the original use.
While the exterior is characterised by the rawness and clarity of the materials, the interior is dominated by fixtures, furniture and objects of outstanding craftsmanship. Here, too, a reduced material palette of wood, metal, glass, stone and natural fibres can be found. Combined with vintage relics and works by local artists. All in warm, understated sandy tones, with permeable fabrics and special textures inspired by the surrounding beaches, dunes and cliffs.
The two-storey house has three double bedrooms, two of which are equipped with an additional bunk bed, two artfully designed bathrooms, a utility room and a combined living and cooking area. The large kitchen island with an open view of the national park forms the centrepiece of the house and almost looks like an altar. The minimalist interplay of cool aluminium, whitewashed walls and custom-made fixtures made of warm oak wood also defines the dining area. Flanked by textile details and other works of art. With three large window fronts, the living room becomes almost an open-air cinema with a view of the endless expanse and the starry sky – accompanied by the steady rhythm of the sea.
