The charm of two worlds: Just like the scenery in Lagrasse, a small village in the south of France with medieval structures, the Vipp Townhouse builds a bridge between bygone eras and modern times. Surrounded by picturesque nature.

Ferienhaus Vipp Townhouse Lagrasse in Okzitanien, Lagrasse / FR – France

Holiday home Vipp Townhouse Lagrasse

Between the wooded hills of the Corbières, a winding road leads through lush valleys and vineyards until the stone bridges of Lagrasse appear. With its winding alleyways, medieval houses and historic arcades, the village on the banks of the River Orbieu is considered one of the most beautiful in France. Right on the market square, the Halles de Lagrasse stands the Vipp Townhouse, a 14th-century historic dwelling with thick stone walls, small windows and a sloping tiled roof, all of which are representative of the historic setting. Built around 1350, the narrow, three-storey building was used as a private residence for centuries until it was renovated by the Danish family business Vipp in collaboration with Toulouse based architect Matthieu Paihes and Danish interior designer Julie Cloos Mølsgaard.

The spirit of the listed building has been preserved, complemented by modern functionality, such as the historic façade, whose new windows and front door now shine in a muted green colour as is customary in the region. While the shell remains true to the original charm, the interior creates a contrast of minimalist, calm elegance with contemporary furniture, customised fixtures and local craftsmanship. In line with the interplay of solid walls and light-footed design, wood and delicate stainless steel meet stone and marble.

You enter the house via the living room, whose coarse pebble floor continues the cobblestones of the village square, allowing the inside and outside to merge into one another. A sculptural staircase with an artistic banister leads to the first floor, the centre of the house — with a modern aluminium kitchen island and a round dining area made of marble, wood and green accents, which opens onto a small balcony overlooking the square. A wonderful place to watch the morning hustle and bustle with a coffee. A large terrace to the rear of the house offers further seating and dining areas. On the second floor, there is not only the bedroom with a double bed, but also an open-plan bathroom with a spectacular freestanding shower made of regional red marble. The mirrored wardrobes draw on the composition of French interiors, including storage space.

In contrast to the striking stone paving on the ground floor, the two upper levels feature light-coloured, flowing wooden floors that act as a perfect stage for the minimalist, harmonious furnishings. The colour of the walls also has a history: they are painted the same warm shade of white as Lagrasse Abbey — the village’s landmark. However, a glance out of the window or a step outside the door is all it takes to be captivated by the place: the market square with its small restaurants, boutiques and weekend market has been lately experiencing a lively revival.

What to do

The surrounding hills invite you to hikes through vineyards and oak forests, wine tasting and other regional specialities, shopping at the weekend market on the doorstep, cooking together, in the summer months the river Orbieu is dammed for swimming, a visit to Lagrasse Abbey from the 8th century, excursions to the neighbouring villages or to Carcassonne and Toulouse

Why we like this house

An overall aesthetic experience: in light of the contrast with its minimalist, warm interior, the historic building reveals its very special charm.
