Built at the beginning of the 20th century, the water tower at the Kaiserbahnhof in Potsdam once supplied water to steam engines at the station. A German-Spanish couple, both architects, saved the tower from falling into decay and converted it into a holiday apartment, which now extends over six levels and includes a roof terrace. When staying at the water tower the fitness program therefore virtually comes included – but you’ll be rewarded with beautiful views of Potsdam’s Wildpark (wildlife park), as well as the New Palace.
Plenty of historic details, including the domed ceiling on the ground floor, fair-faced brick walls, an old iron staircase, and an historic water tank with original fittings, were preserved during the renovation. Between the kitchen on the ground floor and the living room (which includes sleeping options) up in the water tank there are three sleeping levels with bathrooms and a room dedicated to the tower’s history on the fourth floor. Except for the bathrooms, the rooms have no doors, but there are curtains for privacy. The open design of the living areas, the round rooms and vertical visual axes create a wonderful sense of space. Meanwhile, the modern and simple furnishing highlight and contrast the tower’s industrial architecture with its old masonry and steel.
What to do
The water tower stands next to the wildlife park and is within walking distance of the Sanssouci Park. You can reach the center of Berlin in 30 min. from the Park Sanssouci station, just a few meters away. The historic city of Potsdam also has a lot to offer. Activities in nature include walks through the wildlife park, trips to the many lakes in the area, and bike rides.
