The beach at St. Peter-Ording on the Eiderstedt peninsula in Schleswig-Holstein measures twelve kilometres, making it the longest sandy beach in Germany and a paradise for water sports enthusiasts of all kinds. If you follow the mudflats with their salt marshes and tidal creeks on one side and the wetland landscape on the other – preferably by bike on the dyke path – you will soon reach the small, tranquil village of Vollerwiek.
Here, between fields and the North Sea, lies the Westerdeich 22 holiday home – a wooden bungalow whose low height allows it to blend discreetly into the trees and dense bamboo planting.
The single-storey timber construction impresses with its minimalist, functional design and consistent use of materials. Inside, the load-bearing timber structure has been left exposed on the walls and ceilings. The eye-catching feature are the floor-to-ceiling, flush-mounted windows, which offer an unobstructed view across the fields to the dyke. On spring and summer days, when the sliding doors are open, there is seamless access to the surrounding terrace with its cantilevered roof.
The centre of the house is the spacious, open-plan living, cooking and dining area with a kitchen island, long table and cosy sofa corner. Here, too, the transition to the garden is fluid, and there is a glass-enclosed fireplace for cooler days. The three bedrooms and two bathrooms – one of which has a free-standing bathtub and sauna – can accommodate up to seven guests. A small reading room can be used either as an additional bedroom or for working.
In addition to various seating areas, a barbecue and a fire pit for long evenings, children will find a sandpit in the garden and cooking enthusiasts will find herb beds. From the house, it is 200 metres to the dyke for walking or cycling (there are two bicycles and a child trailer) along the Wadden Sea – surrounded by the interplay of the tides and most beautiful at sunset.
