With sweeping views of the sea, Casas da Vargem sit in a sunny location on a hillside above the village centre of Ponta do Sol on Madeira’s south coast. The semi-detached house was built on two stone warehouses that had fallen into ruin. They were reconstructed and supplemented with cubic volumes of similar dimensions that cascade down the terrain, creating patios in between.
From the street side, the casas are hard to make out: They are situated below street level—only the top floor of the larger half of the house is partly visible; a few steps lead down to the entrance. The smaller half is accessed via an external staircase. The interiors of the casas merge seamlessly into one another; each level has an exit to the outdoors. On the upper level is the bedroom (or two bedrooms in the larger holiday home), followed by a lounge corner and the kitchen with dining area, which opens onto the terrace with large windows. The furnishings are simple and minimalist, but have a warm character thanks to the wooden floors and furniture. The main attraction is the view over the hills to the sea.
The casas share an infinity pool surrounded by tropical plants. In addition, each house has a hot tub located at each side. Below the houses is a lush organic garden—guests may take herbs, vegetables or fruit at their leisure.
What to do
The houses are in a rural location, but still close to the village centre with bars, restaurants, shops and the beach. One of the typical levadas (footpath along a watercourse) can be reached in a 20-minute walk. Excursions to the capital Funchal and the sights of the island.

Sustainability
The house does without air conditioning. All the rooms can be opened up to the outside or to the patios, so that cross-ventilation can cool the house down in summer. The windows are positioned to make the most of the sunlight without causing the indoor temperature to get too hot.

In love with Madeira and this perfect house!
We had the most beautiful time here in November 2021. Miguel has been a perfect host. Due to the fact that he is working in a hotel nearby he organized perfect service for his houses as well (fresh towels, bathrobe, bed linen etc). Everything has been totally clean and well prepared for a safe and comfortable stay.
For our stay we choose the smaller house of the two ones. It has a clean and nice design, a very well fitted kitchen (you can find best quality of kitchen appliances — never had that experience in other houses before!!) and of course — the view is amazing!
You can have a sundowner in the pool or in your warm bathing tub, you can cook and eat some of the best herbs out of the owners (parents) garden. The house is also surrounded by many plants and has a large terrace to enjoy the sun at daytime, the stars at night and the silence.
We also loved to be visited by some cats during daytime and especially in the evening. But do not worry — they have been totally sweet and did not enter the house (even if you open the door).
All in all I would say, this house is the best choice you can ever make for a stay at Madeira and we will come back for sure. Thank you so much, Miguel and see you again!!
