Ferienhaus Cons 148 in Graubünden, Vrin / CH – Switzerland

Holiday home Cons 148

High up in Val Lumnezia – the valley of light – nestled in the Alpine landscape lies the small mountain village of Vrin, which is known even beyond the borders of Switzerland for its architectural culture and sustainable village development. The holiday home below the small mountain church in the district of Cons blends into the scenery of Walser houses. The double house was built in 1801 using traditional timber framing and was inhabited by two families. When the current owners acquired one half of the farmhouse together with the adjacent round timber barn, they brought the small ensemble into the present day with a few deliberate interventions. This was done in line with the example set by Swiss architect Gion A. Caminada, who is known for the sensitive redevelopment of his home village and for giving historic buildings a contemporary perspective in a simple way.

To preserve the essence of the Walser house and the identity of the village, wood continues to play the leading role. Old and new blend together without stark contrasts—such as the old wall paneling and historic floors, which have been complemented by new wood paneling and plank flooring made of raw silver fir. The basic structure of the house has also been preserved: when you arrive at Cons 148, you are greeted in the entrance by the hearth of the soapstone stove and a modern staircase that incorporates a cloakroom and a toilet. From here, you can either go into the cozy living room with a long wooden bench, large oak table, sofa, and historic stove, or into the kitchen, which, despite its modest size, invites you to cook together. The historic doors and deep window sills tell of bygone times and different standards across all floors. Otherwise, the room heights have been raised to just under two meters to protect your head and back.

One floor up, there are one double room and one single room (with an extra mattress for a child), a bathroom panelled in fir wood with a large shower tray and an even greater feel-good factor, and an airy hallway that opens onto the gallery in the attic. Here, two further bedrooms – one with light wood and a skylight, the other with a spacious bed platform and antique wood surfaces – provide even more sleeping space. Particularly authentic: as in the past, the bedrooms are only temperate, while all other rooms are nice and warm.

A harmonious highlight is the furniture, which comes from the owners’ own workshop and mediates puristically between the ages. Between the house and the barn, which serves as a showroom for additional furniture, there is a sheltered outdoor area with seating, perfect for relaxing after a mountain or ski tour. On balmy evenings, a south-facing bench and a small terrace invite you to enjoy the tranquility of the small village.
