An extensive orchard surrounds the white-painted farmhouse with grey shutters on the outskirts of Illerbeuren, whose simple, uncluttered architecture seems to be rooted in the present and yet looks back on over 200 years of history. d’Kammer – a place where people celebrate, laze around and work, where they meet friends and the whole family comes together. Just like Grandma Anna, a passionate hostess, used to do. In order to fill this place of remembrance with new life and sustainable ideas, granddaughter Julia Staudinger, together with her husband Michael and Memmingen architect Alexander Nägele, has transferred the old farmhouse into the present without losing its original charm. The result is a versatile and multi-award-winning aparthotel-style accommodation that continues the traditional building culture of the region and combines it with contemporary aesthetics and modern standards.
In order to preserve the existing building, the necessary interventions were kept to a minimum. Wherever possible, components were repaired, reused and supplemented with natural, durable materials such as wood, lime plaster, hemp limestone and bricks. The existing potential was also skilfully used in the structure of the interior, reinterpreted and transformed into functional spaces with timeless architecture and a special atmosphere. Whether for holiday relaxation, working away from the hustle and bustle, for retreats or workshops. For guests’ retreats, the former stable and hay store have been converted into bedrooms and living rooms of different sizes: The airy holiday home with two floors can accommodate up to ten guests; supplemented by two family appartments and three studios for single travellers or couples. Always with white, warm, mostly local wood, clear design, deliberately selected colourful highlights and a view of the greenery. Some with creaky wooden floors or other details that tell the story of farm life in the past.
The barn with its loft-like ambience is suitable for workshops or family celebrations, there is a yoga room in the granary which can be rented for retreats, the silo now functions as a staircase and the former milking parlour is now home to the Kammer Kafé with small tables and a communal kitchen, where guests can enjoy a slow food breakfast and homemade cakes and an inspiring chat with the owners. Outside, the spacious garden opens up a parallel paradise with a sun terrace, barbecue areas, pizza oven, Finnish sauna, boules court, playground and crafts shed. Surrounded by over 30 varieties of fruit trees, flower meadows, bees and sheep. A real farm idyll, both in the past and today.
