Engelwirt Apartments Berching

Engelwirt Apartments Berching

Spectacular dolomite cliffs, vast juniper heaths, castles and palaces – the Engelwirt Apartments are located in the centre of the small medieval town of Berching on the Main-Danube Canal and are not only a starting point for discovering the Altmühltal Nature Park, but are themselves a refuge for those interested in art, design and architecture. Together with the Swiss architecture firm Atelier Dimanche, gallery owner Michael Zink and his wife Stephanie have revitalised the former bailiff’s residence and later inn. Since then, original stucco ceilings, historic doors, marquetry work and rose-pointed floors have come together with antiquarian furniture, design classics and contemporary paintings, sculptures and events.

Today’s Engelwirt ensemble consists of two baroque monuments from 1686 – the bailiff’s residence and the servants’ quarters – and two modern buildings, which are connected by an inner courtyard with a conservatory. 15 different sized appartments and a holiday house are spread over the four buildings. Each of the accommodation units is between 30 and 90 square metres in size, individually furnished and a work of art in its own right. Some are spread over two floors, some have a balcony, others a garden, and are always full of history and expressive art by international artists. To match this, the colour concept sets new accents in bold red, orange and blue, which bring the historic ambience to life.
Surface-integrated photovoltaic modules were installed on the listed roof. A pioneering project in Bavaria.

There is a carefully selected library, a small daytime café with a breakfast parlour – in summer in the inner courtyard – and a regional shop with products from the Upper Palatinate and Franconia, which helps to revitalise the city centre. Along with a variety of cultural events throughout the year.

What to do

The Altmühltal Nature Park is a multi-faceted recreation and adventure area with hiking and cycling trails starting right on the doorstep, boat trips on the Main-Danube Canal or the Altmühl, boating, horse riding, climbing, swimming in the adventure pool or in the surrounding lakes, visits to Stone Age finds and the Dinosaur Museum, art and culture in the Engelwirt Apartments and the nearby towns or a trip to Nuremberg (approx. 60 km).
