In and around the island town of Werder in the Havelland region lies Ferien Werder – a simple name for a dazzling kaleidoscope of eras, spaces and possibilities. Between the branches of the Havel River, vineyards and extensive orchards, architects Jurek Brüggen and Aimée Michelfelder have created a multifaceted retreat that combines two properties, six different buildings and eight individual apartments, welcoming guests with a regionally oriented concept and relaxed atmosphere. Surrounded by lush vegetation and in harmony with the seasons.
Each of the architecturally outstanding buildings – which strike a balance between the ages – stands on its own. Complemented by small to large gestures that continue to tell the story of the place.
‘Am Mühlenberg’ – a sprawling garden and floodplain forest landscape on the historic island of Werder – is home to organic grapevines, a belvedere built in 1858 that invites visitors to travel back in time and sample wine behind neo-Gothic stained glass windows, and a narrow wooden footbridge that leads directly out onto the water. Accommodation is available in one of the apartments in the 1920s Art Deco-style tower villa or in the Remise, a former 18th-century barracks for disabled soldiers with a neoclassical gabled façade. These are complemented by modern buildings designed by Jurek Brüggen, such as the Jahreszeitenhaus (seasonal house) – a living concept that changes throughout the year – and HAIN – an ecological building made of fieldstone, wood, clay and reused bricks, where wine is pressed, yoga is practised and workshops are held.
‘Im Scheunhornweg’, located opposite the island on the mainland, offers guests an enchanted garden with mature trees and two further architectural highlights: a studio house designed by Peter Bartning in 1932 in the Bauhaus style with large north-facing windows, interconnecting rooms and a roof terrace. And the garden house, a former garage renovated with recycled materials and a conservatory extension, which is based on the work of Rudolf M. Schindler, one of the important representatives of American modern architecture. Nestled in a sunken garden. In addition to a sea of plants, the buzzing of wild bees and a water lily pond, there is also a wooden jetty with a view of Werder’s old town and the opportunity to swim or paddle across to the other side.
Each of the eight light-filled and contemporarily furnished apartments is designed differently and furnished with a mix of refurbished vintage furniture. Only nature serves as a connecting element – either on your own terrace, your own balcony or directly in the gardens. Here, birds chirp cheerfully in the morning, the jetties invite you to jump in or take an ice bath, the listed town centre with its fishermen’s houses and waterfront promenades invites you to stroll, and the avenues of fruit trees invite you to walk or recite Fontane’s ‘Herr von Ribbeck auf Ribbeck im Havelland’.
