The listed Tgèsa Surrein is located in a small hamlet in Graubünden, south of the Rhine and around two kilometres from Sedrun. It was not until 1984 that the hamlet was directly connected to the transport network with the construction of a bridge over the Rhine.
Built in 1801 using the Strickbau construction method, the Walser house underwent extensive restoration in 2012/13 under the supervision of the historic preservation authorities, during which much of the historic fabric of the building was revealed: the old wooden floor was found under several layers of vinyl, and the original Strickbau walls were found behind the wall panelling. The single-glazed windows were repaired, missing front windows were replaced with ones true to the original, and the cement plaster on the exterior façade was replaced with lime plaster based on the historical model.
The result is two flats, one of which is rented out as a holiday home for up to six people. The 100-square-metre flat captivates with its authentic charm: a living room with panelled walls, wooden floors and a heavy soapstone stove, rustic knitted walls in the hallways and a traditional lime floor in the bathroom. The modern fittings in the kitchen and bathroom and the simple furnishings provide a harmonious contrast.
A cherished ritual is the evening walk around the house to the cellar to fetch wood for the stove: you experience the night falling and the moon rising – and look forward to returning to the cosy parlour afterwards.
