A gravel road leads up through the cultural landscape of Messinia until a detached domicile blends into the topography of the hill at 300 metres above sea level. The extensive property belongs to the Natura 2000 area and is surrounded by an olive grove that opens up towards the coast. The secluded location in the midst of nature and the 360° panorama make the house a truly special experience. From the west-facing terrace, you can look out over the vast sea where the sun sinks in the evening, to the south over the island of Venétiko, to the east the highest mountain in Greece, Profitis Ilias in the Taygetos mountains, and to the north the ‘black mountain’ of Mavrovouni.
The elongated, two-part building with a flat roof is aligned parallel to the coast. Its clear, minimalist architecture forms a contrast to the multifaceted nature and acts as a stage for the natural light. The building consists of a main house and a guest house, which are slightly offset. This creates different terraces that can be used depending on the time of day. A surrounding wooden pergola covered with reed mats frames the ensemble and gives it a delicate structure while providing shade.
The light-filled and comfortably furnished living level for a total of six people is barrier-free, complemented by a utility room and a garage that ‘disappear’ on the lower level. The main house comprises a spacious cooking, dining and living area with kitchen block, dining table, corner sofa and fireplace, which can crackle on cooler evenings. Floor-to-ceiling windows and natural stone floors throughout create a seamless transition between inside and outside. Behind the living area is a double bedroom with adjoining bathroom. There are two further double bedrooms in the guest house, separated by a bathroom.
What to do
Nothing is a must, everything is possible - a relaxed home that celebrates unexpected discoveries and happy coincidences. Nevertheless, here are a few possibilities: Swimming at the nearby beaches of Selitsa with Cape Akritas and Tsapi (approx. 15 min. by car), hiking, playing golf (Costa Navarino), excursions to coastal or mountain villages, e.g. to the nearby village of Vasilitsi or to Koroni with its medieval castle, nunnery, long sandy beach, tavernas and shops, visits to numerous historical sites, e.g. Methoni and Pylos with Byzantine-Venetian-Turkish castles, the archaeological site of Messéne or the Palace of Nestor.
Why we like this house
A straightforward holiday home with ‘dramatic’ views from a box seat on the southernmost tip of Europe's mainland.
This house is great for
Couples, families (children aged 10 and over) and groups of friends looking for peace and privacy.
Owner
As an airline captain and museum curator for Oceania, Michael König and Oliver Lueb have already travelled to many unique places around the world. With their house Kap A kritas, they have created their own haven of peace with a lot of passion, enthusiasm, patience and the support of numerous people, where they spend time as a couple or with family and friends, cook together, look at the sea and enjoy nature.
